“Good job, champ,” I praised. “Just like a professional.”

“Can I be a chef like Charlotte when I grow up?”

I grinned. “That sounds like a great goal to have. I’m sure she could teach you a whole lot about cooking.”

“I want to own a restaurant and feed everyone,” he said. “Just like Charlotte. She doesn’t care if anyone is a wolf or a vampire.”

My grin lost some of its hues but remained intact. “You’re just going to be a big softie, huh?”

He chuckled. “I want to love everyone.”

My gods, how was I blessed with such a compassionate kid? He came from two angry people who were stuck in a situation that wasn’t ideal. Yet he turned out to be more loving than anyone I had ever met.

No wonder he got along so well with Charlotte.

“Dad, set the timer,” Henry said. “And don’t forget to check it.”

“You got it, sport.”

Once the timer on my phone was set for thirty minutes, I inspected the ring and then opened the oven again, dropping the ring into the batter.

“She’ll remember this forever,” I said.Or she’ll end up in the ER.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. When I checked the screen, a text from Sasha warned me that Charlotte was just a few minutes away.

“Shit.” I covered my mouth when my son glared at me. “Sorry, kiddo. But Lottie is arriving a lot earlier than planned.”

He gasped. “Hide the cake!”

“It’s in the oven, Henry.”

“Hide the oven!”

I tipped my head back and laughed. My son frantically rushed to the oven to peek in the window.

“It’s only been like five minutes,” I told him. “How are we going to distract her?”

“Go give her a hug,” he suggested. “Give her a reallybighug!”

Amusement sent me jogging out of the kitchen. In the hallway, I saw my mate walking purposefully toward me, wearing high-heeled boots with black shorts and a tight collared blouse. I swear my heart leaped right out of my chest and pumped dramatically outside of my body.

Or that was how it felt, anyway.

“Hi, babe,” I said a little too loudly. “You heading to your office?”

She studied me curiously. “Yeah, I need to get started for the day.” She sniffed the air. “Is someone baking something?”

A pan clattered behind me. I propped my hand on the frame of the door, trying to act casual as I said, “Nope.”

“You’re hiding something.”

“Absolutely not.”

She squinted. “Adam Bradley, don’t you dare lie to me.”

“Why would I lie to my darling cherry?”

“Maybe because you’reupto something.”
