I choked. “Well, uh…”

“Sure,” Charlotte said. “Ask Christopher if he wants one, too.”

Christopher sidled into the kitchen and regarded me with a curious glare before turning gratefully to Charlotte. “I’d love a piece.”

“I made it myself,” Henry said proudly while reaching for a plate that Charlotte set near him. “Dad helped a little bit.”

“I’m sure he did his best,” Christopher teased. “It smells amazing. I already feel like I’m in heaven.”

Grunt dug into their slice. “Ah, it’s perfect.”

“Just the right amount of icing,” Charlotte complimented after swallowing a piece. “Though it kinda tastes like…” She chuckled. “I must be silly. It tastes like silver.”

“Silver has a taste?” I asked nervously while rubbing my neck. It was way too hot in here right now. “How do you even know that?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I can just tell. It’s almost like I put a ring in my mouth or something.”

Henry coughed.

I wiped my forehead and reached for a plate. “Might as well…”

“Dad,” Henry whispered. “Where is it?”

“I don’t know,” I hissed. I broke my slice apart. “It’s not here.”

“Where’s what?” Charlotte asked. “You know I can hear you when you whisper, right?”

Christopher squeaked while tossing his plate on the counter. “Okay, there’s something hard in there.”

“There it is,” I said with relief as I reached for the plate. “Sorry, Lottie. You were supposed to find this.”

“What is it?” Charlotte asked while looking at the plate. “Is that a…?”

She gasped while clutching her necklace.

“Adam Bradley!” she squealed. “You didn’t!”

I grinned. “I did.”

“Into the cake?”

“Yeah, it was supposed to be a surprise.”

Christopher snorted. “Anticlimactic.”

“Could do without your opinion, barkeep,” I joked. I plucked the ring from the cake and wiped as much icing off it as possible. “Anyway, I’m sorry it’s a mess, baby, but here you go.”

Charlotte gaped at me. “That’s a ring.”

“Yes, baby. And it goes on your finger.” I coughed while rushing to add, “As long as youwantit to go on your finger. Which…do you?”

“Are you proposing to me?”

I nodded while taking her hand gently in mine. “Yeah, cherry. I am. I’m doing a really bad job of it, aren’t I?”

Christopher chuckled. “If you ask me…”

Grunt took Christopher’s arm and tugged him toward the door. “Actually, I have something to ask you, Merlin.”
