Not my son. Please, this can’t be happening. He can’t die.

Petite hands manipulated my shoulders, turning me away from the door. A cushioned chair cradled my body next while a cool cloth met the back of my neck. When I tilted my head back, I found golden eyes. Glittering gemstones, more like it. Blooming cosmic worlds. Explosive stars.

“Charlotte,” I whispered. “What happened?”

“A panic attack.” She applied pressure to my neck. “This should help.”

I frowned. “Did she tell you more?”

Her lower lip quivered, worry dancing through her pupils while she whispered, “Yes, she did.”

“Tell me.”

“Take a deep breath, Adam. It’s going to be okay.”

And I believed her. While the reaction was as far away from logic as could be, every fiber of my being sat with reasonable assurance that she was right. There was no earthly reason for that to be true. Yet it was. Because she spoke it.

Maybe what Lorena said was true.

My hands found her waist, her lower back, the soft flesh of her thighs just beneath the hem of her shorts. Cool skin greeted my palms and put me at ease. Underneath, warmth pulsated like the steady beat of a drum, the rapid hum of blood circulating her body loosening my tension.

Within a few minutes, I was calm again. “Sorry.”

“No, don’t be sorry.” She stroked my scalp. “We have to find a reversal spell for the curse placed on Henry.”

Anger gripped my heart. “They cursed him?”

“They’re siphoning his life force for whatever spell they’re preparing to do. They said they needed him and I guess this…” She choked, her fingers curling into my hair. “God, when I get my hands on them, I’m going torip them apart.”

“Breathe, cherry. One thing at a time.” I closed my eyes while trying to calm my racing thoughts. It didn’t seem like this nightmarish adventure was going to end. “Where do we find the reversal spell?”

She sighed. “Buried with the betrayed bride.”

“Great, so we have to figure out a riddle, too?”

“Sasha would be able to help us. She’s had to unravel riddles from Lorena before.”

I nodded into her stomach which growled in my ear. “We’ll go by the inn next. We should eat, too. I can tell you’re hungry.”

“I’m not hungry.”

Her stomach protested.

I didn’t need to look at her to know she was blushing. “Sure, cherry. Whatever you say.”

“You’re hungry, too. I can tell your energy is low.”

“Really? How?”

She cupped my face, commanding my attention. A thousand promises occupied her touch, her fingertips alerting my skin with the affection she didn’t bother to hide.

Yeah, maybe Lorenawasright.

Charlotte smiled at me. “I can always tell when you need food. It’s a gift.”

“I must be such a lucky guy.”

“Beyond lucky. I could just as easily leave you to fend for yourself.”
