He smirked while dumping a bag into the open backseat. “You were worrying yourself sick. Admit it.”

“No.”

“Alright, spanking it is.”

Hiding my smirk didn’t work. Neither did turning away from him. He caught my waist again and tugged me close to his chest, burrowing into my neck where the hickey on my neck sang with a pleasant soreness.

“You ready?” he asked. “You sure you want to do this?”

I nodded. “It’s my fault. I should be going instead of both of us.”

“You really think I’m going to let you do this alone?”

But what I knew he meant was,You really think I’m going to let you fuck this up all over again?

I sighed.

My brain wasn’t going to let me rest, was it? “We should head out while we still have the day.”

“Alright, I’ll get the boys.”

Once Lucius and his three guards were stripped and shifted, I hopped into the jeep with Adam and Nina, watching the sky for a long time as Adam maneuvered the vehicle out of the parking lot. If any vampires were in the inn, they wouldn’t be aware of our movement. Even with their humans watching us, they wouldn’t be alerted of our plans until much later.

Before dusk, we would be back in town. We weren’t going to risk being ambushed as we had been at the ranch.

Which didn’t make any sense, I considered as I clung to my seat belt.Even Bruise couldn’t give us a good lead. And they know just about everything.

Fluffy clouds danced in the cerulean blue sky. Birds flocked ahead of us in a v-formation, pointing like an arrow to our destination. Soon, the brimming buildings would give way to lively forests. And then, we would hit the cliffs.

The wind whipped my hair around my face as I turned to Adam. “How long?”

“Another hour or so.”

“You nervous?”

He clutched the gear shift while we mounted a hill. “No.”

“You’re such a liar.”

“I’mnotlying.”

Nina leaned forward to shout over the wind, “Would you two kiss already? This sexual tension is making me nauseous.”

I smacked my forehead. “Oh, sweet gods.”

“She might have a point,” Adam teased. “I could use a kiss before going into battle!”

“We’re not going into battle.”

Was I ever going to win?

Probably not. “I’m tuning you both out. Don’t bother me.”

When I focused on the wolves running alongside the jeep, I noticed how they kept a tight perimeter. Lucius and his men knew what they were doing. I was grateful that they accompanied us but also worried about my girl. Did they have enough defenses back at the ranch?

It’s fine. It’s daylight, I insisted mentally.

But I wasn’t entirely convinced.
