A moment later, his heat dissipated as he drifted toward the lane to line up another shot. Letting the daggers fly seemed to encourage him to persist with his endeavor to prove himself to me, even as he repetitively missed his mark. Once he finally landed a dagger, he cheered victoriously and whirled around to face me. His dramatic bow was far too entertaining.

“See? I did it,” he announced while crossing his arms over his chest. “I just needed to get back into the habit.”

“Is that what you tell all the ladies?”

His eyebrows rose inquisitively as he sauntered toward me, slowly closing the distance between us with a deviant expression. “I get the feeling you think I can’tperformproperly, cherry.”

“It’s not that. It’s just…” My voice faded when he stepped within touching range. And then he stepped even closer. “I didn’t want tothrustyou into a situation you couldn’t handle.”

“I told you I can handle just about anything, didn’t I?” His voice dropped an octave as he added, “I can go another round if you’re not tired.”

I whimpered softly when he bowed forward, lips so close that I could feel how his skin twitched with desire for closure. The way he towered over me made me feel protected rather than threatened, an odd reaction to a man who barely met the height requirements of most of his sex.

Maybe he was short to his alpha, but he was tall to me, and it didn’t bother me like it usually might. My chest swelled with excitement as his tongue danced out from between his lips and sought refuge in my mouth. The plunge of his tongue inspired a desperate mewl as I wrapped my arms and legs around him, hopping into his arms like we were lovers who had missed each other for centuries.

His hands cupped my bottom as his lips danced over my mouth and cheek. The edge of the table cut into my back as he slammed me into it, objects clattering loudly while his hand stroked the back of my thigh and rested behind my knee. This was what I had wanted all along, a taste of him. It was the most wildly arousing aspect of being a wolf, sensations were heightened so strongly that everything was infinitely better.

Food, sex, liquor, and sleep were incredibly satisfying in ways that I couldn’t articulate to humans. And with Adam, his heated kiss was deeply gratifying, so alarmingly phenomenal that I desperately climbed him like a tree.

And I didn’t want to stop.

Chapter 3 - Adam

Arousal was like a drug with Charlotte. We had been teasing each other verbally since our encounter upstairs and it had made me ravenous—I’d hoped kissing her would be enough. While her lips quenched part of my thirst, it put me into a delicate position right between her thighs. A decision had to be made, and soon, or else I would suffer the wrath of my alpha for getting distracted on the job.

But hadn’t he done the exact same thing?

She broke the kiss and pushed me away, teetering slightly as she steadied herself against the table. “Okay, time out.”

I wiped my mouth anxiously. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.”

“No, don’t be sorry. I should have been clear with you. I should have…”

I shook my head. “You have nothing to be sorry about, cherry.”

Her eyes widened as she observed me, the dazzling gold of her eyes swallowing me up. If she allowed it, I would look at her all night, but we both had shit to do.

My cock was certainly thinking about other things instead. I coughed as I adjusted my jeans, trying to hide the partial tent I popped.

“Yeah, I do. This isn’t the time or the place,” she pointed out while standing up straight and fixing her bodice. “Your kid is wandering around and I don’t want him getting the wrong idea about me.”

“What would be the wrong idea?”

Her features froze in pensive thought. After a moment, she replied softly, “I’m sure his mother wouldn’t be happy about you kissing me.”

“His mother isn’t even around. You don’t have to worry about her.”

“I didn’t want to assume you were single. I just didn’t…” She ran her fingers through her hair, disturbing the perfectly straight silky brown strands. “Wow, I didn’t even think to ask.”

“I’m single, Charlotte. You don’t have to worry about that.”

“Yeah, I’m single, too.”

I grinned smugly. “I sure fucking hope so.”

Her eyes glittered with amusement even if she wasn’t smiling. Everything about her was gorgeously sassy and intense. One look from her could take me down easily—but I wouldn’t tell her about that just yet. If she knew she had that kind of power over me, well… That wouldn’t bode well for either of us.

An amused chuckle surfaced as I motioned toward the door. “Should we take a walk and talk about it?”
