Nina gently unfolded a large map over the table. “Here’s where the streets meet Domingo’s fortress.” She rolled open another map and layered it next to the one on the table. “And here’s the catacombs according to Bruise.”

“I’m glad they have such a good memory.”

“The fae remember things forever,” she pointed out. And then she added just a little bit louder, “So do women.”

I frowned. “Nina.”

She gave me a void expression. “What? Isn’t it true?”

“Sure, but you didn’t have to…” I trailed off while inspecting the doorway to the living room. Adam hadn’t budged an inch. Maybe that was a good thing. “Let’s just focus on the plan.”

“Do you want your playmate in here for this?”

An exasperated sigh echoed from me. “Yeah, sure. Call him in.”

“Adam?”

The couch squealed. The floorboards wheezed. The whole cabin seemed to respond to Adam’s presence as if knowing exactly what he needed.

Unlike me.

I knew it was stress breaking us apart. But if it was this easy to get warped over our connection, then were we truly meant to last? My hand found the mark before I could even think of stopping it.

“So,” I said while ignoring the ache in my heart. “Here are the streets that lead to Domingo’s door.” I pointed to a series of lines. “But if you look at this map—thanks, Nina—then you have a direct route via the catacombs.”

“We can access the tunnels about three blocks up without being detected,” Nina explained. “It’ll have to be during the day. In about…” She glanced at her designer gold watch. “A few hours.”

Adam nodded. “Is that enough time to plan?”

“This is your rescue mission,” she retorted. “What do you think?”

He huffed. “I’m just trying to get a feel for things.”

“You mean like you did with my sister?”

I gasped. “Nina, seriously?”

“What?” She folded her arms over her chest and sneered at Adam. “He’s been hounding after you ever since Sasha got engaged. I could tell he was trouble from the beginning, but I wasn’t about to stop you from learning your lesson.’

Adam rolled his eyes. “Sure, I would believe anything that comes from the high-maintenance wolf.”

“Better judgment than my girl here, obviously.”

I growled. “Stop it, both of you.Stop it right now.”

“He’s been using you, Lottie,” Nina directed the observation toward me without breaking her staring match with Adam. “And he’s going to keep using you until he’s done with you.”

“Oh, because you can read my mind, right?” Adam posed sarcastically. “I’m sure Lottie can figure things out for herself.”

Nina arched one of her perfectly trimmed brows. “Should we ask her?”

“Maybe we should.”

Stunned. There was no other word for what I felt. Nina and Adam turned expectantly to me as if I could chase away the elephant in the room. Their invasive stares made me feel like I was getting interrogated. And for what? Some really great dick?

“Okay, time out,” I blurted while forming the letter T with my hands. “We’re getting way off track here. The kid needs to be rescued. I can sort my love life out later.”

“The kid,” Adam repeated bitterly. “I see how it is.”
