I glanced at Lucius. If he hadn’t helped me, I don’t know what would have happened to Henry and me.

He gave me a nod of solidarity, sewing into place a patch of my heart that I didn’t realize had been missing for a while. Support was my greatest comfort these days.

My left arm burned with awareness. That’s why this hurts so much. It feels like she doesn’t support me.

I smoothed my hand over my right pocket. It wasn’t the right time for anything involving Charlotte right now. But my desperation doubled the longer we went without speaking.

“Torches?” I whispered while grabbing my flashlight. “Light ‘em if you got ‘em.”

Nina waved her hand. “Not yet. Let the wolves scope out the humans.”

More darkness crowded my vision. The deeper we walked, the eerier it became. Stone walls curved around us like an eternal vortex of gray. What my night vision could perceive wasn’t fantastic—much of the place appeared void of life, even the undead kind.

Until we heard ayapreverberate up ahead.

I growled. “That sounds like Henry.”

Lucius grabbed my shoulder. “No, don’t run ahead. It could be a trap.”

“This whole thing has been a trap,” I argued.

But I heeded his warning nonetheless.

A few growls vibrated the air and I heard the snap of jaws. Lucius and I picked up our pace, leaving Nina and Charlotte behind. Gravel snapped underfoot as we jogged to the point of tension, a room that opened up to reveal several tunnel entrances.

Two wolves faced down two humans. Where was the third?

“Iver?” Lucius called.

Neither of the wolves responded.

A bad feeling stung my gut. “This isn’t good, Lucius. We have to keep moving.”

“I have to find my guy.”

“He probably went ahead.”

He shook his head while removing his clothes. “You go on. These two will handle the humans. I’ll go after Iver.”

“But we don’t know where to go.”

Nina caught up to me while pointing at a tunnel on the right. “That way.”

Humans slipped from the shadows, each of them holding a weapon. A few had knives while some held led pipes and even fewer boasted swords. It was medieval down here. But that was probably how the vampires liked it.

“We can’t let you pass,” one particularly pale human stated. “We have to protect our masters. You of all people should understand that.”

I gritted my teeth. “Where’s the kid?”

“He’s in our care. He won’t suffer for long.”

Charlotte stepped forward with her throwing daggers drawn. “Don’t make us do this. Just let us pass you.”

Nina cocked an arrow in her bow while guarding our backs. “We don’t want to kill you.”

“We don’t want to fight you either,” the withered human replied. “But we will if we must. Anything for the masters…”

I shook my head. “We’re wasting time. We have to tear them down.”
