“You’re right. There was never anything there, to begin with.”

She sighed. “Lottie, don’t talk like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like it’s already over. It’s only just begun.”

I met her gaze, violet eyes swirling with an explosion of cosmic color. And warmth. She was always so warm.

It faintly reminded me of summer.

“How do you know that?” I asked in a low voice while leaning into her touch. “I walked away. Don’t you think he wouldn’t see that as a sign?”

“You walked away because you weren’t certain about your place in his life.”

I frowned. “Gods, did you study psychology while I was gone?”

“No, I just see things differently from my perspective.”

“Hooray for that.”

She grinned gently. “I can see a lot from out here. You already had a shaky relationship with your mother before she put you into foster care. While you ended up with a family eventually, you went through a rough system.”

I nodded. “Talk about uncertainty.”

“You saw Henry without a mother and that hit you right where it hurts the most.” She touched my chest. “Your heart.”

I shuddered. “But that doesn’t…”

“It explains everything, Lottie. You’re worried that you won’t live up to the expectations that Henry might form of you in that position.” She paused for a moment, taking both my hands into hers. “And the ones that Adam might form, too.”

“Am I a good read? Is that it?”

She laughed. “I’m sorry. I’m just trying to help.”

“I know. It’s just…” Tears burned my eyes. “It hurts so much, Sasha. I feel so sick without him.”

“Then, you need to go to him.”

I shook my head. “He doesn’t want me. I’m not useful to him anymore.”

“Charlotte Boise, you are worth so much more than what you can give people.”

She squeezed my hands, commanding my attention.

“Don’t you ever speak about yourself like that ever again,” she warned, her voice cracking with emotion. “That man cares so much about you. But you’re too worried about disappointing him to let him do anything about it.”

My eyes snapped so wide that I thought I got knocked in the head by a divine creature.

Or Christopher was playing with time again.

I shook my head. “Pardon?”

“Acting oblivious again, I see,” she teased. “You heard me, Lottie. You know how you feel about him.”

It was my turn to squeeze her hands. “Is this what you went through with Donovan?”

“It was a roller coaster. One of the worst kinds.” She smiled. “But we made it through and now we’re getting married in a month.”
