“No, you need to go find Adam.”

I shrank back slightly. “Do I have to do it right this second?”

“That would be ideal, yes.”

“But Sasha…”

She glared at me, inspiring me to raise my hands. “Alright, don’t have a heart attack. You already had one about the flour.”

“I can’t believe you let me hug you,” she whimpered while wrapping the apron around her. She tugged on the pockets and groaned. “I look so silly.”

“Take the service elevator.”

She nodded. “Yep. That occurred to me.” Her eyes softened when she looked at me. “Go. I already told Donovan you were coming by today so security doesn’t snag you at the entrance.”

“Thanks, Sasha.”

She grinned on her way out the door. “And Lottie?”

“Yeah?”

“You probably need to change, too.”

She giggled while leaving the kitchen, the sound of it fading down the hall as I stared at my chef jacket and slacks. Yep, I was covered head to toe in flour. I probably needed a shower more than anything. Though I was worried about the drain getting clogged with how much flour was clinging to my body.

After wrapping up the dough and setting it in the fridge with instructions for Christopher, I headed up to my suite using the service stairs. Screw the elevator. I didn’t want to wait that long to see my mate. Any delay would make the process of getting to him unbearable.

My mate, I repeated in my mind while darting into the bathroom. I stripped away my clothes and lazily tossed them toward the laundry hamper.I can’t believe I have a mate.

Me of all people—the weapons expert, the talented chef, the snarky one-night stand who rarely stuck around for coffee the next day—was mated to the most perfect wolf on this earth.

And I planned on making sure that it stayed that way.

Chapter 21 - Adam

After leaving Henry with Donovan, I took my truck into town to visit the inn. My heart pounded like a jackhammer in my chest the whole way, all sorts of scenarios rolling through my mind. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before.

Then again, I hadn’t ever met someone like Charlotte.

The way she slipped into my mind like she always belonged there—like she had existed there all along—made me wonder what else I had been missing in my life. Without her, I wasn’t sure if I could thrive.

When the inn came into view, the tension in my chest mounted. The tavern would be busy tonight. Making a fool of myself in front of everyone was my idea of a good time, but I wanted to prove myself to Charlotte. She deserved to be with a man who cared about her and who would throw caution to the wind. In all the right ways.

It’s just a tavern. It’s fine, I assured myself while locking up my truck and heading toward the entrance.Donovan has done this. He survived. Now he’s going to get married.

A smile spread over my lips as I tucked my hand into my right pocket. The cord was still there. I could hand it to her and explain everything. And then our lives would continue as if nothing had ever gone wrong.

Except thingshadgone wrong. To proceed without acknowledging that would only make us stumble all over again. All the apologies in the world weren’t going to prevent us from fighting.

But it would help us get back on track.

Everything Donovan had me write down stuck out in my mind. Apology first, explanation second, and then grand gesture. If I had to do backflips in my wolf form for treats in the middle of the tavern, I would do it.

Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that, I thought while approaching the thick door to the bar. I sighed, pausing for a second with my hand resting on the wood.I haven’t been this nervous since Donovan proposed to Sasha. And I wasn’t even the one doing the proposing back then.

Hell, I wasn’t the one doing the proposing now.

One thing at a time.
