But I was going to make sure I did everything I could to keep it from ending too soon.

Chapter 5 - Matéo

There wasn’t a word in existence that could describe the beauty of the woman seated before me. Taking her was easier than anything I had ever done. It was resisting her that was the problem, an error on my part that I knew I would pay heavily for once she disappeared into the maze of the inn.

Perhaps I could have located her by scent, but it seemed such an arduous task compared to what I was doing right now.

Which was possessing her in every way possible short of biting her neck.

Her eyelids fluttered rapidly as I scooped her from the table and set her on the bed. I retrieved the hand towels from the bathroom and cleaned her carefully, making sure to clear the mess from the most delicious part of her; between her thighs. A parting kiss would have helped me sleep better—and in turn, her—but it would have only ramped us up again.

Exhaustion was quickly winning us over. If I stole too much of her energy, then she would have nothing for tomorrow. Morning light would soon creep over the horizon. It was best to get to sleep.

I glanced at the table, surprised the tray hadn’t fallen over as I yanked on my briefs.

“Mmmmmm…?”

The sound of her inquiry captured my focus. She was all loose limbs and parted lips, rosy pink flushing her body wherever I had worshiped her. Everywhere my lips and hands had blessed, her flesh bloomed with warmth. Especially between her legs.

And that only made me hungry again.

“Food,” she whimpered in a high-pitched voice while pointing at the table. “Brought it. For you.”

I barked with laughter. “Rose, that’s the last thing on my mind.”

“Oh, but…” She swept her hand lazily over my stomach. “I can hear your stomach growling.”

My stomach lurched as a hunger pang twisted my insides. Maybe she wasn’t wrong about that. But itstillwasn’t my top priority.

Right now, my top priority washer.

Despite my arguments against taking her, I couldn’t help admiring the melted gumdrop laying on my bed. Her hair spilled in a mess over her right shoulder as she burrowed toward the mattress, seeking warmth and comfort. Though wrapping my arms around her for the night would have been as easy as licking her into a fit, I knew better.

She had to go on her way. It was for the best.

Still, my hands didn’t move. My feet remained planted in place.

What harm were a few more minutes?

I’ve been alone for so long, I thought as I crawled onto the bed and slid my arms around her.I forgot what it’s like to have company.

That was the strangest thing about the pack I helped—it was nice having their company. Though their battles weren’t mine and their mysteries could make me care less, I felt drawn to their energy. That alpha, that man with the patience of a saint and the calmest voice I’d heard since my father last spoke to me, had felt like an old friend rather than an ally.

Impossible, I thought as Rose nudged my chest with her nose.I don’t even know them.

A voice came out of the deepest recesses of my mind to ask,Then, why did you help them?

Nothing but the ticking clock came through the silence. The sweet scent of brown sugar, bubbles, and cotton candy invaded my senses, lulling me into a weakened state.

I sat up abruptly. “We should get you back to your room.”

She hummed while sitting up. No arguments from the girl who had just suffered through about two orgasms. Three if I dared to count the way she reacted when I kissed her.

“Come on,fleur,” I urged. “Up we go. Easy now. That’s it.”

I helped her get dressed. I shuffled with her to the door. I kissed her temple before guiding her into the hallway. Everything felt like the usual sort of hookup that I might have had at any of the motels in the area.

But this was different.
