“The steak was perfect, but the candy I had before my meal was much better.”

And just like that, the strawberry sprouted right back.

What could I say? Seeing her flustered entertained me. It was a daring thing to talk about publicly, but that was more than half the fun. Rose hadn’t seemed like the type of woman to just hook up with anyone. I was going to make sure she remembered exactly who she had chosen to sleep with last night.

Even if it did happen to be our one and only night together.

The thought of that irritated me.

I cleared my throat. “It was comfortable, Rose. Thank you again for your hospitality.”

“It’s nothing. Really.” Her smile relaxed and her shoulders lowered from her ears. “Do you want to take anything with you? A meal? A snack?”

“Are you trying to keep me around or something?”

She giggled uncontrollably while clicking a few more keys. Again, for the show. It was cute how she thought she was trying to act normal.

“Maybe,” she admitted. “I was told if I behaved that I would…” Blush tickled her cheekbones. “Anyway, that was one of my wolf sisters.”

I nodded at the door behind. “Charlotte?”

“Yep, Charlotte. She’s been between here and the ranch.”

“The ranch?”

She nodded. “She was helping Adam with some things regarding the vampire-wolf wars.”

“I’d like to know more about that.”

“Yeah?”

I cleared my throat, trying not to get too excited about the connection between the inn and the ranch. That put me squarely into their business again.

And into Rose’s business, too.

“Do you know anything?” I asked. “Did you find anything?”

She frowned. “They found some things. I could always collect the research and show it to you if you’re really curious.” Her eyes widened. “Hey, those vampires were really after you specifically last night. Do you know why?”

I shook my head. “I helped the ranch just last night before I met you at the diner. A lot was happening. It was a mess.”

“Oh, Charlotte told me about that.” She blinked like there was something in her eyes. And then she went so still that I thought she had stopped breathing. In the tiniest whisper, she said, “You’re the black wolf.”

I smiled humbly. “I’m the black wolf.”

“Lottie told me… And then Adam said… Donovan was…” She gulped. “And we…”

“Easy, fleur. Don’t faint. My reflexes are slow today.”

She laughed nervously and then looked at the counter, playing with a lock of her wheat blonde hair. “If you want to know more, I can book us a room.” Eyes widened again. “I mean, like aconferenceroom. Not abedroom or anything like that.”

“You’ve been good,” I teased. “Either one would work just fine for me.”

More blush infected her cheeks. It spilled into her neck, drawing my attention to the professional purple blouse she was wearing. That silver chain hung around her neck.Rose. I smiled, knowing she could see my gaze lingering on the necklace.

When I met her gaze, she fixed me with a flirtatious grin. “Tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow.”
