“I enjoy handling the scum for him.”

I smirked. “Sounds like you’re nothing but a lap dog.”

“I serve my master as my ancestors did before me.”

“Are you getting paid for it? Getting healthcare? Is it a package deal?”

One of the vampires to my left snickered, inviting the ire of Lars. When the snickering stopped, Lars focused on me, all the amusement drained from his features.

He sneered. “You can hold the medallion. We want to know why.”

“Your guess is as good as mine.”

“You know something.”

He stepped into the clearing, his boots glistening with a fresh layer of black polish. Tarnished bronze buckles lined the sides, leading to a pair of snug black jeans paired with a plain black button-down shirt. A cape hung from his shoulders, the inner lining sewn with purple silk. Like a royal.

Or an ancient jerk.

“I don’t know shit,” I snapped. “And I wouldn’t tell you anything if I did.”

“I beg to differ, you mangy bastard.”

My expression darkened. “I wouldn’t expect you to understand loyalty. You’re just an errand boy for Domingo. Does he really care about you or does he only value what you give him?”

“Enough!” He swung his hand toward me, motioning to his lackeys. “Get him!”

Two vampires lunged into the clearing. There was just enough cover from the thick mountain trees to keep them guarded against the parting sun. Three vampires flanked my right as Lars advanced, wearing a dark grin. The shadows deepened the malice in his eyes. Soon, the world would dim and blanket this region in chaotic darkness.

And then, I wouldn’t stand a chance.

Donovan and his pack were just down the mountain. The strength it would take to breeze past my attackers and get down there would drain me of a fight.

But if I stuck around through this assault, then I might not escape.

I bowed my head while searching my soul for the answer.

And all I could see was Rose.

Shimmering bubbles floated through my core and carried with it the scent of cotton candy. She infected me with her energy, imbuing me with the ability to face anything.

And only because Iwantedto see her again.

Gods damn it, I groaned internally. I cracked my neck and rolled my shoulder, fixing my devious gaze on Lars. For once, can I just chop some wood in peace?

A growl signaled my shift. Lars retreated as the other vampires converged on my vulnerable form. Black fur and white canines burst forth from the wreckage, vulnerable no longer.

And certainly more volatile, too.

Hissing echoed around me as I gnawed my way out of the fang circle. I knocked over two vampires and used one as a bouncing board, launching into the air and landing directly in front of Lars. He was the one with the problem, not the fangs behind me. If he wanted to take me down, then I wanted to see him try.

Even though we both knew he would fail.

That’s why he’d brought this group, I thought while gnashing my jaws menacingly. He doesn’t stand a chance. He’s a coward. But with help, I might not make it.

Lars smiled viciously while wielding a hunting knife. The blade glittered despite the lack of sunlight, luring me into something of a trance. He advanced with the weapon, slicing the air in front of me. It wasn’t an attack—it was a warning.

Another lunge broke me from my trance and prompted me to hop back. Pain seared my right hip, eliciting a howl and then a volatile roar. I spun rapidly with my claws extended. Only Lars had the foresight to duck. The others flattened to the ground like pancakes, some of them bleeding profusely.
