The shiver in her voice—the sheer fear in that statement alone—was what made me grab her. I hooked my thumbs into the loops of her jeans and kept her snug against me as I stole her lips repeatedly. Soft mewls greeted my tongue. Lustful groans vibrated my lips next. And then she was in my lap, carefully straddling my thighs.

When she leaned into me, I hissed.

“Hey,” she whispered. She slid from my lap and rested on her knees beside me. “Don’t hurt yourself.”

“I’m fine.”

She gave me a knowing grin. “You’re injured. You just said it yourself.”

“I would have healed just fine in wolf form.”

“Yet you showed up in the human form in the alley behind my office.”

I blinked.

She had a point.

But I wasn’t about to say so.

“Sure,” I agreed. “I showed up in wolf form.”

“I’m surprised you showed up here at all.”

“Why’s that?”

She frowned. “I got the impression that you didn’t approve of this place, that you didn’t like it.”

“No, I…” I bit off my sentence. Memories crowded my brain—it wasn’t time to tell her about that yet. “I don’t approve of it, but you seem to have things under control.”

She nodded. “Generally, yes. We like to keep it simple around here.”

“It works for you. That’s great.”

“I’m sensing that you don’t approve of that either.”

I took her hands in mine. “You don’t need my approval. You’re perfectly capable of making your own decisions.”

The shy smile on her lips told me it was the right thing to say even if it wasn’t something I would normally say.

WhatwouldI normally say? It wasn’t like I had many friends to speak of. Or lovers.

Or family.

“Matéo?”

I raised my eyebrows. “Yes?”

“You were talking in your sleep downstairs.”

“What did I say?”

A battle broke out on her face, causing her to look at the inches of space between us. Barely enough room. Yet not close enough. I stifled the urge to yank her back into my lap if only for the sake of my knife wounds.

“You mentionedPapaandMaman.”

“And?”

She twisted her hands together. “I got the impression that…” She shook her head. “Sorry, it’s kind of silly. You just said something about strangling.”
