“Who, Domingo?”

She nodded slowly. And then she added tentatively, “Or Lars?”

My hand instinctively curled into a fist. “Why would Lars tell us anything?”

“Because he’s always at the tavern. It’s neutral, so he can grab a drink with his friends.”

“Maybe you could listen in on his conversations.”

She paled. “Heavens,no, Matéo. That would violate…” She counted quietly on her fingers, lips moving soundlessly. And then, she shook her head. “So many violations. So many lines crossed. The Council wouldfry usif they knew we were trying to pull one over on—”

She paled even more. If that were even possible.

“Oh, dear,” she croaked. She licked her lips. “We’ve already done something like that.”

“What?”

She shook her head. “When Donovan and Sasha first got together, they were looking into the vampire-wolf wars. I mean, this waswayat the beginning, you know?” She frowned while rubbing the back of her neck. “We pulled this little stunt in the tavern where we fooled Domingo and his buddies into believing that Donovan and Sasha were in the tavern all night. But it was just a glamour to keep Domingo from leaving the inn.”

“So?” I shrugged. “That’s a clever plan. Why would that be bad?”

“It’s a violation.”

I chuckled lightly while closing the folder. “Ma petite fleur, are you a stickler for rules and regulations?”

“No, I just…”

She brushed her fingers through her hair, quivering under my inquisitive gaze. Red popped up on her delicate flesh. The gods couldn’t have given me a better view. Not even in the mountains.

She shrugged. “It’s deceptive. This place should besafe, but I backed up the plan because I was so worried about Donovan and Sasha getting jumped.”

“You did what you needed to do for your family.”

“No, I broke a promise. And I did it for selfish reasons.”

My fingers shook as I grabbed her hands, holding them to my chest. The plate teetered on her knees, but I didn’t care about the food. I didn’t even care about the research.

I only cared abouther.

“Rose, believe me,” I whispered. “You did what you could for your family. And you’re doing it now. Don’t doubt yourself for a second.”

“I just feel like—”

“Rose?”

She raised her eyebrows while leaning toward me. “What?”

“Shut up.”

Those eyes glittered with mischief all over again while she shook her head, a playful grin tugging at her lips. “Make me.”

A hungry growl vibrated my chest. The steak wasn’t appealing anymore. I didn’t care about the plate falling over or the mess we were about to make with the papers. But Rose seemed to care a lot more than me. She caught the plate, set it aside, and gathered the pages before it could become an unmanageable mess. She set the folders aside, too, getting everything squared away within seconds.

And then, she came back to me.

She didn't try to kiss me or mount me. She simply sat on the edge of the bed with that amused grin, those mischievous eyes, that darling mouth. Soft and supple lips waited for me to claim them. I knew she was acting up just so I would kiss her, but she was right. I was injured. She was tired.

But how could Inot?
