“I can’t…” I huffed. “You’re right. I shouldn’t leave you out. You’re not weak and helpless.” I offered her an encouraging grin. “I’ve seen you punch.”

She blushed and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “Yeah, well…”

“I need your help finding this fortress. What do you say?”

“Well, where the hell do we even start? There are a ton of structures sitting on the coast. How the hell are we going to findhisfortress?”

I shrugged. “I guess we should have asked.”

“You lost your temper.”

“I did.” I bowed my head. “I made a mistake. I cost you valuable time.”

She took my hand. “No, Matty. Don’t. He was being rude. He made me feel…” She shuddered. “It was gross.”

“They do that.”

“I hate to say it, but I was starting to like him.”

I gritted my teeth. “All part of that charm.”

“Matty?”

“Yes, Rose?”

She smiled sheepishly. “Honey, you’re hurting my hand.”

I released her hand, noticing the red marks where I was squeezing her fingers too tightly. I frowned while rubbing the irritated flesh. “Fuck, I’m sorry.”

“I’d be worried if you weren’t jealous about Domingo.”

“Smooth-talking, blood-sucking, ancient ass fucking—” My wide gaze met hers. “Wait, what?”

She grinned warmly. “If you didn’t respond to him hitting on me, I would have been very concerned, Matéo.”

“Well, I’m not usually the jealous type.”

She squinted. “Somehow, I don’t believe that.”

“I’ve never dated anyone before, Rose.”

Well, that certainly wasn’t something that should have surfaced.

I struggled to recover the outburst, fumbling over a million sounds to formulate new words, to get something else in the air instead of that ridiculous statement.

But her grin only widened the more I attempted to remedy the situation.

She leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to my lips. Silence exploded around us along with a thousand miniature fireworks. Those molecules that vibrated with anxiety were now erupting in the space around us, between us. It didn’t matter. Nothing did when Rose touched me like this.

When she drifted back, I fought for her return, circling her waist to keep her from sliding away. She didn’t fight me. She didn’t deny me. She let me steal as much affection as I could stand—and truly, there wasn’t enough for me to imbibe. I needed more of her.

The heat of her slit warmed my thigh. A soft sigh inspired me to peel my eyes open, to see how she had wrapped her legs around my waist and arched toward me on the bench. It was weird to see how easily my body responded to her without any thought at all, without any prompting.

How did she manage to do that to me?

“Matty,” she whimpered. She rocked her hips, coaxing me to harden with each wave. “I want you.”

“We can’t. Not right now.”
