Fear sharper than anything I’ve ever felt made my heart quiver. I clutched my chest. “Ouch, that hurts.”

He grabbed my hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” He paused while looking over the small scrolls. “Do you think they were looking for this?”

“Maybe. Possibly.”

“We have to check it out. We have to go there now. It’s under my father’s name—Beauchamp. That means we… I… It could…”

I squeezed his shoulder. “Breathe. Let’s get back to the truck. We can’t stay here, Matty. They came once and they’ll come again.”

I managed to drag him away from the fireplace, but he froze in the doorway, his limbs heavier than stone. If he had the deed to a house, then what else did he have that he didn’t know about?

And why would Domingo want them?

Chapter 17 - Matéo

This wasn’t getting any easier.

Not only had my childhood home gotten fucked over by a group of shitty fangs, but I couldn’t find my mother’s wedding ring. Instead, the deed of a house I didn’t want had surfaced, mocking me with the signature of my father’s name on the bottom line. The pages were worn, weathered, harboring yellow spots and withered edges that suffered some heat damage.

Just how long were these documents hidden in the fireplace?

“It doesn’t make sense,” I said while rolling the documents up to be placed back into the tube. “I rebuilt most of this place.”

“What do you mean? Do you think it was planted there?”

I shook my head. “No, the fireplace was part of the original structure, but…” I frowned while rubbing the back of my head. “I watched my father build that fireplace with my own eyes. He never put anything like this in there. I would have known.”

“He could have put it there later. Maybe he just didn’t want anyone but himself to know.”

“It just doesn’t make sense. And that memory ofMamanwhere she asked about a man named Arnaud, it…” I shook my head. “Hang on. I have to get something.”

“What? No!” She grabbed my arm. “Matty, we have to leavenow.”

I yanked my arm away from her. “This is important, Rose. You wouldn’t understand because you don’t have parents, but this isreallyimportant.”

“What did you just say to me?”

I marched off without replying, stomping through the cabin like I was the big bad wolf searching for the three little piggies. Tipping over a table revealed the polished box which held my mother’s ring. I snatched it from the ground and grabbed a cord from nearby, looping the cord through the ring and wrapping it around my neck.

I closed my eyes as the metal touched my skin.

Once again, I had her with me. I didn’t need to worry. I had to focus on the future instead.

Peering up the hallway revealed Rose and her dejected stance. She was staring outside at the clearing, one hand on the door frame and the other over her stomach.

You wouldn’t understand because you don’t have parents.

Fuck, why had I said that to her?

My wolf growled at me for being so rude as I hauled ass toward the front of the cabin. “Rose?”

“We should go.”

Her voice was so small that it hurt to hear the words.

I touched her shoulder, trying to regain control of my emotions. It wasn’t like me to lose my temper or bite the people around me. Then again, spending time around people wasn’t usually my thing. Maybe spending all this time in the mountains had stunted me more than it had helped.

But I wouldn’t say that out loud.
