She rolled her eyes but then closed them, exhaling slowly as I held her waist. The world around us invaded our space, the sound of the wind rustling the trees and the distant cry of a hawk joining the orchestra. Branches creaked as birds chirped. It was the perfect setting to think about her.

I pictured the diner, the way Rose blushed when I touched her necklace. The warm flush of her skin burning like a spotlight when I looked at her, laughed at her jokes, tuned into her scent. It all came rushing back, a chorus of emotions that crashed into me as I realized right then and there she was looking at me.

Not my scars.

Not my strange eyes.

Me.

Like I was the most beautiful creature in the entire world.

A soft gasp escaped her lips. The more I thought about kissing her, getting tangled up between her legs, the more she shivered, her teeth practically chattering.

“Me,” she whimpered. “But that’s cheap, Matty. I could have guessed that first just because you… you’re…”

“I’mwhat, Rose?”

She shuddered and pulled away. “It’s not possible.”

“What’s not possible?”

“There’s no way you care about me like that.”

Confusion bled into the joy that had once sat on my face. “Why do you say that? Haven’t I shown you I care about you?”

“But why?”

“Whynot?”

She stared at me as if I had sprung two heads. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

“You must have met too many shitty men to be so doubtful of me, Rose.”

“You’re not wrong.”

My heart seized. “Gods, you can’t be serious.”

“I don’t have a lot of experience, okay? I’ve hooked up and I’ve had maybe three relationships, but it’s never been serious.”

“It’s sort of the same for me.”

She eyed me suspiciously.

I broke under the pressure, huffing as I said, “Fine—I never really had a relationship. Happy now?”

“I’m always happy when you’re honest with me, Matty.” She smiled cheekily.

“I’m trying to be honest. It’s hard.”

She smiled weakly and stepped forward, taking my hands gently. “Great things require hard work, don’t they?”

“Sometimes.” I glanced at the cabin, recalling every log I sanded to get it just right. A proud smile broke out on my lips. “Actually, yes, always.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

I nodded to the truck. “We should head back, shouldn’t we?”

“You’re in charge. What do you think?”
