“You’re hurting me. You need to stop.”

I shook my head. “Not until you feel it, Matéo. Not until you understand that I love you.”

His hands went slack on my upper arms as his entire expression changed. Where fury had rooted into his face was a bed of tilled emotions, a combination of shock and awe. Minutes later, his features relaxed, lashes batting frantically as if he was trying to keep himself from crying.

Was he about to cry?

I softened. “Matty, it’s okay.”

“It’s not okay. I don’t want to feel this.”

“What? Feelwhat?”

He growled while grabbing my hand, exposing my palm to him. Cool air swept over my fingers, soothing the burn. But it was such agoodburn. I wanted it back.

Desperately.

He shivered. “Like Icareabout what happens to you.”

My lips quivered. “But…”

“Butnothing, Rose. It’s easier to run, okay? It’s much safer for me to be by myself because that means I’ll never have to lose you.”

“That’s not a life worth living.”

He cringed. “It’s better than the drama that’s been my life since we met.”

“That’s not fair,” I claimed while trying to pull my hand away. He gripped my wrist tighter. “You were at the diner first.”

“Oh, so now it’s a game of who was first?”

I doubled down on my anger even though it didn’t make sense. “You kissed me first, too. You… You came onto mefirst.”

“You never stopped me.”

“I didn’t want to stop you. I liked it.”

He squared up, advancing on me, forcing me to relinquish my position. “I suppose you’re mad about liking me, is that it?” His eyes glittered with dark amusement. “Oh, I guess it’slovenow, isn’t it?”

“Don’t mock me.”

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.”

I sniffled. “That’s because you like being in charge.”

“I thought you like it when I’m in charge, Rose.”

My back slapped a wall and the air left my lungs, causing me to quake. He planted his hands on either side of my head and leaned close, so much so, that his breath coasted over my lower lip.

And all I felt was hot, raw desire.

This wasn’t a fight anymore. This was foreplay.

“Talk, little boxer,” he teased viciously. “You had the high ground. Don’t lose it now.”

“I… I like…”

He nudged my chin with his nose. “What?”
