Rose, watch out!

I gasped when he shoved me out of the way. An arrow landed on the ground, narrowly missing both of us. The sound of it whipping through the air had been masked by the storm.

A growl rose in my throat.

Those bastards, I shouted internally. They think they can sneak up on us!

Matéo stepped up next to me, his voice speaking in my mind,They can’t.

I yelped.I can hear you!

He stared at me.I can hear you, little boxer.

What the hell is going on?I asked.Wait, we don’t have time. Duck!

Another arrow whizzed over his head, cracking in the stone wall behind him. The two of us turned around, scanning the expansive yard for enemies. But none of them appeared. The only sign of their attack were the two broken arrows.

That wasn’t good.

Matty, we’re surrounded, I told my mate. What are we going to do? I can’t see them.

He lowered his head toward the ground and stepped forward, confident even as he was cautious. His hulking form broke the heavy rainfall. While his nostrils flared, he said,Keep close to me. We have to follow the wall to the side.

Fear struck me as I remained close to him. My eyes rolled around the area, noticing old flowerbeds and stone statues defeated by other storms—or creatures. Two figures appeared in the curtain of drops and I barked, alerting Matéo immediately. We fled from the wall as more arrows zipped toward us.

One of them sliced my snout.

Ouch!I yelled.I got hit. It’s definitely poisoned.

His responding howl cracked through the air, louder than the thunder above. A split second later, he charged through the yard, barking viciously at the pair of archers standing near a set of giant boulders. Fog rolled in, thickening my vision and preventing me from seeing Matéo.

Terror struck a chord in my heart. I sprinted forward without thinking, listening intently for the sound of arrows whipping through the air. I darted around the flying missiles and snapped one in half with my jaws, my only goal to make it to my mate. He needed to be protected. He needed to be defended.

And that wasmyjob.

Moist earth slicked my paws and tripped me up. Despite the challenge, I kept running, my heart beating furiously in my chest over my mate potentially being in danger. Up ahead, I heard the clash of him with the two vampires, bodies colliding in a vicious war over an ancient hatred.

My human side frowned.

Is it an ancient hatred?I questioned.Or is it something deeper?

Without any time to think about it, I propelled my body forward, darting through the last of the fog—and toward the edge of a cliff.

Matéo snatched my tail and dragged me back. Pain shot through my core, tingling all the way to my paws as I recovered my position. I flipped around and faced the fangs, noticing they had dropped their bows to the ground.

Not much use for those up close, was there?

“Silly beasts,” one of them spat, shouting to be heard over the rain. “You won’t win this battle!”

I growled as I advanced, baring my saliva-soaked teeth.

“This place isn’t yours,” the other accused. “It wasneveryours. Your father made sure to ruin that for us!”

Matéo froze beside me.

Even more information to process.

Would he be able to handle it while we fought for our lives?
