“No, I just…” The room was empty. That made me scared. “Where are my sisters?”

Matéo sat on the edge of the bed while stroking my hair. “Charlotte went to make a meal. Nina is tending to the other three wolves with Sasha.”

“Are they all okay?”

“Everyone is okay, little wolf.”

I sniffled. “I almost lost you.”

“You mean, I almost lostyou.” Disappointment mingled with indignation in his eyes. “My ignorance sent you right over the edge.”

“No, it didn’t.” I squeezed my eyes shut. “Heavens, maybe it did. I don’t know.”

His hesitance thickened in the air. “Rose?”

“Don’t talk. I need to think.”

“About what?”

Trying to recall the cliff made my head hurt. “What happened? Did something happen?”

“Hang on. Try not to think. Sasha said this would happen.” His weight lifted. Sneakers padded across the room. His voice boomed, “Sasha! Nina!”

“No, don’t.”

His weight returned. “Rose, take it easy. You’re going to be alright.”

“Get away from me. You’re a murderer.”

“What are you talking about?”

I pushed his chest, my fingers burning when I brushed against something metallic. I winced and yanked my hand back. “Ouch! Itburns.”

He frowned while holding up the medallion. “This? I thought it didn’t burn as long as I was wearing it.”

The metal glinted in the dim light. Sasha and Charlotte showed up in the doorway, expressions contorted by concern. Something about this room made me feel queasy. I licked my lips, tasting saline and something else, maybe cotton.

“Ugh, my throat,” I complained. I touched my neck, feeling like I was trying to swallow sand. “I need water.”

Sasha slid into the room and grabbed a bottle from the mini-fridge. She popped a straw into it and handed it over, smiling gently as she watched me. Other than weird nausea, I was fine.

But I wasn’t fine.

Sasha glanced between Matéo and me. “I heard you found a letter opener with Domingo’s seal on it.”

The image of it flashed in my mind. I blinked. “Yes, we did. It was odd to find that there.”

“Nothing else belonged to Domingo,” Charlotte pointed out as she leaned against the door frame. “Just that.”

“Odd,” Sasha whispered. “Do you think your family stole it? Or maybe they did business with Domingo?”

The question was directed at Matéo, but I didn’t think he heard anything. He was too enraptured by the medallion in his fingers.

Sasha leaned forward. “Matéo?”

He jumped. “Yes?”

“I asked if your family ever did any business with Domingo.”
