“Column A, Column B.” She flipped her hair back, exposing a bit more of her shoulder for me to imbibe. And how much I wanted to do so… though I wanted to do much more than just imbibe.

But now wasn’t the time.

“You’ve been pursued,” I stated blandly. “For what?”

“Not me. My wolf sisters.”

I frowned. “There are more of you?”

“Not me specifically, and not by blood, and mostly not because of…” She tapped her chin curiously, her expression as vibrantly inquisitive as she was loud and bubbly. “Well, we’ve been meddling.”

“Meddling?”

She nodded proudly. The disconnecteddingof an elevator made her squeak and she motioned for me to follow her down a hallway equally as decadent as the lobby with damask walls painted in rich gold and salmon pink. Electric lamps lined the walls, each door hosting a name and what might be found inside.

Curiosity nudged me toward a couple of knobs, but I largely ignored my urges. My only desire was to be close to this wolf, to this woman who seemed to have a lot of experience with the vampires wreaking havoc in the area.

And on me.

And on mylife.

“Here,” she whispered. “Let’s take you to a room.”

She plucked a card from her bag and then hit the button for the elevator. It took me a minute to realize we were in a much smaller lobby that hardly lost any of the posh decors of the previous lobby. This entire place was polished from head to toe.

Color me impressed.

When the elevator arrived, the doors parted to reveal a white marble interior with mirrors.

“Do you want a meal?” Rose asked while hitting a button on the fifth floor. “Something to help you replenish? They didn’t injure you with any knives, did they?”

She studied my arm carefully while keeping her hands to herself. Irritation lashed through me when she didn’t bother touching me at all.

I was too exhausted to explore that feeling, though.

“They’ve been notorious lately about poisoned knives,” she continued in a worried voice. “Both Sasha and Lottie have been injured multiple times. And their mates, too.”

“Mates?”

She nodded. “It’s been a busy season here at Sunrise Mill Inn.”

I cocked my head to the right. “I don’t understand.”

She shrugged as she tried to stifle a yawn. The yawn stretched into a sleepy hum as she raised her arms above her head. Her tank top rose, revealing the flesh of her midriff and inspiring a low growl.

Lucky for me, she didn’t notice.

“All these weddings and things lately.” She waved her hand. “Dizzying.”

“Do you hate weddings?”

She shook her head and grinned. “Heavens, no! I love a good wedding. I just don’t like them back to back, you know?”

“So, vampires. And mates. And weddings.”

“Well, the weddings haven’t exactly happened yet. You know, because of all those vampires. They just keep coming.”

I hummed curiously while interrogating her expression. Nothing but sleepiness there. She wasn’t lying. “Because of the meddling?”
