“I’m thinking, Rose. Don’t panic.”

“Why are you thinking?”

He hummed. “Whywouldn’tI think?”

“I don’t know. I guess I…”

“Wanted me to sweep you off your feet?”

A bashful smile appeared. “Well, sure. Why not? All of us have dreams of being relieved of our loneliness.”

“You were lonely before you met me?”

I rolled over to face him, propping my head on my hand while planting my elbow into the mattress. “Weren’t you?”

“I asked you first.”

“Are we going to really play this game right now?”

He grinned mischievously. “I just like seeing you flustered. Don’t you think it’s funny?”

I huffed. “No, it’s not.”

He traced my lower lip. “Come on. Don’t pout. I’m just teasing you.”

“Does that mean youdowant to keep me?”

“Maybe.”

His amused smirk pissed me off. “I told you when we got back—”

“I thought you forget about that.”

“No, I said, ‘When I wake back up, I’m going to smack you.’”

He arched his right eyebrow. “Is that what it was? Because it sounded more like…” He dramatically imitated snoring, causing me to shove him.

Cackles erupted between us, causing us to roll around on the bed. The night wore on with us laughing and kissing, the world seeming to expand with more time than ever. My worries faded away along with my anxiety, everything melting into the background.

Except Matéo. Never Matéo.

He would never leave me.

Chapter 25 - Matéo

Rose and I weren’t the same.

I could feel it when we woke up the next day and went down to the tavern for breakfast. We sat with Charlotte, Sasha, and Nina, the five of us crowded around a set of tables that Christopher and Grunt had shoved together. Moments later, a young boy darted into the room and lunged at Charlotte who caught him with a loud, barking laugh and then rolled out of her chair.

The two of them wrestled on the ground for several minutes as Adam wandered into the room. “Morning everyone.”

“Morning,” the room responded.

“Henry,” he chided in an affectionate tone. “You’re going to give your mother a bloody nose again.”

Charlotte laughed. “That means his punch is getting better!”

Adam shook his head and sighed as if this happened every day.
