“Charlee Fox?”

Turning sharply, I see a face that looks exactly like someone I know, only a younger version.

This guy could add strands of gray to his hair and pass for Bryce Bridges. He’s so tall, so buff, and…

Right. This is Harrison’s older brother, Mitchell Bridges.

He’s pushing a stroll with a toddler sitting up and sipping something from a cup, and a pretty woman with kind eyes and a gentle smile is beside him.

“Hello,” I respond, wondering what kind of terrible luck I have. I just can’t get away from these Bridges, can I?

“Do you know me, Charlee?” The man asks as he walks toward me. The lady waves and I wave back, smiling at the adorable little princess.

“Yes, You’re Mitchell Bridges. Harrison’s brother. How do you know me?” I remember this man is not involved with the company.

He chuckles. “Harrison told me about you and I saw a picture. Your hair is kind of hard to miss.”

His wife laughs at that. “Hi. I’m Beth. Don’t mind my husband. You have stunning waves.” Her voice is soft and her laughter is genuine.

“Thank you,” I respond, smiling back at her.

“So, what brings you all the way out here?” Mitchell asks, a quizzical look in his eyes that reminds me of Roscoe.

“Uh, nothing. I’m just… living here now.”

I’m expecting his shocked reaction and he doesn’t disappoint me.

“Really? How will you commute to NYC every day?” Mitchell asks.

“I’m no longer with Building Bridges. I’ve moved on from the company.”

More shock.

“But what…”

His wife cuts him off, touching his shoulder softly. “Babe, stop it. You’re prying too much.”

I actually laugh at that. “No, no. It’s okay. I’m sure you’ve already heard about the story between Harrison and me. That’s the reality now. I’m here to live a quiet life and raise my baby in peace.”

Realization dawns on Mitchell and he shuts his eyes in disappointment. “Harrison is one hell of an idiot. How did he allow this to happen?”

A tight smile spreads across my lips. “It’s not his fault. I’m sure he tried his best. Look, I gotta go. My dad is waiting. Please take care of yourselves. Your baby is so adorable.” His wife smiles at me and I take off, checking out my coffee at the stand and heading back to the car.

I hope these people are just passing by and they don’t actually live in Latimer. When would I be rid of these Bridges for good?

Heck, is that even possible? I’m literally carrying a Bridges baby in my belly.

Life is funny.

Dad asks if I’m okay and I nod rapidly, offering him a bottle of cherry juice. We head over to run some other errands—picking up laundry, going to get Dad’s haircut, and stopping at the Thai restaurant to get some tasty Khao Pad takeout.

We’ve just pulled into our driveway when my heart bubbles up to my throat and stays there.

There’s a car parked in the driveway I know all too well.

HOW DID HE GET HERE SO FAST?!
