“That’s very kind of you to say. My wish was for another grandchild, but I understand that will no longer be happening.”

“I guess not.”

“I heard about the annulment. Might I ask why you are pursuing it?”

“Didn’t Hunter tell you?”

“I get few details from that boy. I was under the impression that you two were in love on the wedding day.”

I almost cry, but it turns into a laugh. “That’s a joke.”

“You think so?”

“I don’t think Hunter’s capable of loving anyone.”

“He loves his daughter.”

I nod. “Yeah, that’s all he’s got, apparently.”

“You’re sure about that?”

“There’s no doubt in my mind.”

“And do you love him?”

“What does that matter?”

He repeats the question. “Do you love him?”

“Who cares? He’s out of my life, fugitive from justice. I’m never seeing him again.”

He says nothing, just looks at me until I’m so uncomfortable I start talking again.

“It doesn’t matter. The form’s gone in. He’s happy to get it annulled. It’s all over.”

“I note you have yet to answer the question.”

“Yes, all right. I mean, I think I do.”

“You think you do, or you know you do?”

“I did love him. But the man I loved wasn’t who he turned out to be. I’ve done it before. Stupid me, I know.”

“Perhaps it would be best if you talked with Hunter. Would you like that?”

“He’s not answering his phone. I tried.”

“Would you like to speak with him?”

“There’s no point. We’d only end up arguing like the last time I saw him. Listen, I didn’t come here to talk about Hunter. I wanted to ask if you fired everyone at the magazine.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. What magazine?”

“The one where I work. Unique Couture Monthly? The one Hunter took over a couple of weeks ago.”

“That one? Hunter is still in charge there. Why would you think I fired anyone?”

“Because the paperwork was signed by you.”
