“Close enough.”

Angelo appears in the doorway of the kitchen. “Any left for me?”

I jump to my feet. “You’re alive,” I say, getting hold of myself just in time.

He looks down at himself. “So I am.”

“So what happened?”

“I know you,” Jasmine says. “You like Paw Patrol. Want to watch some?”

“Not until you’ve finished your baspetti.”

Jasmine sticks her tongue out at me. “See, I told you. You do say it like that.” She puts a fork into her food and then frowns. “I’ve had enough.”

“You sure?”

“I’m sure.”

“Then you can watch Paw Patrol while we talk, okay?”

“Yes!” She jumps off her seat and heads through to the lounge while Angelo grabs the chair nearest me.

“Glad I’m back?” he asks.

“What happened?”

“Me and my father had a little talk. I found out quite a few things.”

“Like what?”

“Like that he’s impressed by how I handled myself these last few days so he’s happy for me to inherit when he finally retires.”

“Inherit? As in become the Don?”

“If I want to.”

“And do you want to?”

“Not really. I’d rather stay here with you.”

“But if you don’t take over, who will?”

“I’ll pick someone to run the place for me. All the profit, none of the risk for me.”

“What will you do instead?”

“I saw a place for sale just down the road from here. Thought maybe it was time your roommate had some extra space.”

“Seriously?”

“If you want to give this whole family thing a go, I’m game for it. Getting too old to be running around shooting people.”

“You are heading toward a pension, that’s for sure.”

“Watch it. I’m not so old I can’t hear an insult coming at me.”

“Oh, am I behaving badly? We wouldn’t want that, would we?”
