I was glad when she agreed to hang out with me, and I already knew I was going to blow her mind with the day. I just had to. I owed it to her after the way our last date had ended.

She would forgive me, I was sure of that, but I had to give her that good date first. I had to see where we were going from here. I wanted to take care of this in the best way possible, and that meant I had to give it some thought.

But, I had until tomorrow morning to come up with something, and that was enough time to land on a definitive answer.

Then, I would let the magic begin.

“Now canyou tell me where you’re taking me?” I asked as I slid into the front seat of his car.

“You’re going to love it, don’t worry,” he said.

I had a feeling he was right. So far, anything Trevor had taken me to do or had done with me I had loved, and I had a feeling this wasn’t going to be any different. But, I was also annoyed that he wasn’t telling me where he was taking me.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of surprises, and I wanted to know what was going on.

It was much the same with the letter and what he was going to do about that, but I was grateful to have the surprise to pester him about all day rather than trying to avoid talking about that letter. It wasn’t going away if I ignored it, I knew that, but that didn’t mean that it would take a lot less importance to both of us if we just focused on us rather than that.

“This is somewhere my dad used to take me when I was a kid,” he told me on the way to our location. “He would take me whenever he felt he needed to, but especially in the evening. I’ll show you when we get there why it’s so special to me.”

“Is it in the park?” I asked.

New York City had a lot of cool little places, but I expected something like this to be in Central Park. I could imagine a father taking their kid to a place like that when they needed it, but that didn’t fit in with the clue that it was especially cool at night.

It was pretty well-known you didn’t want to hang out in the park at night, and I couldn’t think of a father who would take their son out to the park that time of day. I wasn’t from NYC, so I did have to rely on things I had heard about the place and simply believed without pursuing it further, though it did make sense to me that it wasn’t the place to hang out with kids after the sun set.

But, he didn’t take me to the park.

“It’s on the north side of town. That’s why I wanted to leave now, so we have plenty of time to get there and get a good spot before the sun sets completely.”

“So, not in the park?” I asked.

“Not in the park,” he said.

Instead, he took me to a smaller park that was in a residential area of the suburbs. He didn’t stop there, driving another hour back further until we were in a part of the city I had never been in before. Normally, I wasn’t a huge fan of being in a strange place without knowing what we were doing there, but I trusted Trevor had something amazing up his sleeves, and he was taking me along for the ride.

He parked the car and we walked around the back of the park to another open playground. There were a few kids playing on the swings, but we didn’t stop. It wasn’t until we walked another fifteen minutes and found a really secluded spot that he turned and looked at me with a grin on his face.

“Where are we?” I asked, looking around.

“Still right in the city,” he said. “We didn’t leave New York. We just came to a place on the north part of town where I knew we could have some quiet. Not to mention, this is one of the only places in the city where you will be able to see the stars.”

“What?” I asked in surprise.

“That’s right.” He nodded.

It had been so long since I had seen the stars, I really did love that idea. I had loved looking up into the night sky when I was a kid, and though I loved living in the city, the night sky was something I missed. A lot.

But, it was already getting late enough that it wouldn’t be long before the first stars would start appearing in the sky. Trevor had brought us a blanket that he carried to an open place and laid out, then he returned to the car to grab the thermos of coffee and hot cocoa.

“It’s amazing how it’s a warm night, but there is still something nice about hot chocolate after dinner. Especially when you are outside,” I said.

“I agree with that. And I thought you would like it here. Have you ever been?” he asked. I shook my head.

“Nope, but I can promise you now that this isn’t the only time I’m going to be here. My mom would love this place. I should see if she wants to come see the stars at some point before the snow starts falling,” I said. “You could even come along if you want. I know my mom likes you, and she would love to hear what you had to say about spending time with your dad.”
