Of course, I had to figure out how I was going to handle the kids and the class, but I managed to get two substitute teachers worked out who were willing to take turns for me while we were gone for the almost three weeks.

It was so nice to have a vacation.

I never took a vacation. Never felt that I had the time before, or the money, or the company for that matter. Now that I had Trevor to go with me, there were a lot of things that I had always wanted to do I could now do. I was taking as many pictures as my phone could keep up with, and I couldn’t wait to send the next round back to my mom.

She was having fun keeping up with our vacation through email, and I was okay with that. I took a picture of the fruit platter Trevor made for the two of us, along with the freshly squeezed juice and the coffee.

Then, I put my phone down and the two of us settled in to enjoy the breakfast.

“I can’t say that I made this, but I did put it out for you,” Trevor said.

“I think you did a lovely job putting this out for me.” I laughed. “I’ll have to return the favor for you one of these mornings, but you seem to have a knack for getting up before I do.”

“You’re on vacation, baby, you should enjoy it,” he told me, but I just gave him a look.

“This is supposed to be your vacation, and I just happened to come along. If anyone should be taking it easy, it’s you. You are the one who is always saving lives and doing all that cool shit, so why not take a breather here?” I asked.

“I do. I’m getting a lot of relaxation time. I like doing things for you, which is why I want you to eat up because I have something I really want to show you, and ever since I told you last night I was going to show you this morning, I haven’t been able to think of anything else,” he said.

“Well, you could always tell me what you have in mind. That way you don’t have to drive both of us crazy with not telling me,” I said, but he just smirked at me.

“Nice try, but if I didn’t tell you last night, there is no way I’m going to tell you now that we’re just an hour or so away from it. Come on, though, I’m excited, and when I get excited, you know you’re going to get to see something cool,” he said.

“I guess you’re right about that.”

I couldn’t argue with that logic, but I did want him to tell me what he had in store for us today. Trevor was so good at coming up with these surprise plans, I never knew what to expect from one day to the next.

I thought this trip to Greece would be the biggest thing he would do, but even since coming here, he has had more surprises each day of the trip. We were only about halfway through the vacation, and I didn’t know how many more surprises he could pull from up his sleeve. Still, he didn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon, so I decided to humor him and picked up the pace for getting ready for the day.

When I was dressed in my tank top and skirt and flip flops, we headed out to the beach. It was sunny and warm, with the breeze coming over the water. There were shells in the sand and little crabs running for the water, as well as seagulls flying high in the sky.

They were really rude birds. I was glad that I didn’t have to deal with them very often in my real life. It was difficult to eat outdoors in some places with how many of them were around, and they would come right on up to us and take our food right off our plates if we weren’t careful to scare them away.

It was funny the first time, but the more it happened, the more annoying it became, and I realized why there were a lot of business owners on the beach who didn’t want people to feed the gulls. It kept them coming back over and over, though the signs didn’t seem to stop some people from feeding them anyway, or the gulls from coming to take their food when they wanted it, either.

Still, I was having the time of my life.

I liked seeing the way people lived on this side of the world, and I loved being able to dress like I was from this part of the world as well. I wanted to experience and enjoy the culture while I was over there, so I could then take it back and teach my students some of the things I learned while I was away.

It was only two weeks, but there was a lot I could pick up to take back to them in that amount of time. I was already going to take back some dried fruits that they wouldn’t get to try in the states very easily, as well as some candy that was from this part of the world. I knew they would all enjoy that, and Raya would enjoy the skirt and tank top set that I had gotten for her as well.

We walked along the beach hand in hand, talking about the beauty of the morning and the part of the world we were in.

“It’s so different from back home. It’s hard to believe that we are on the same planet,” I said.

“You’re telling me. This is like a whole different world. I’m glad you came with me on this trip. It wouldn’t have been nearly this incredible if you weren’t here,” he said.

“Oh, come on, you’re just saying that. You had this planned before you and I were together, so you can’t tell me that you thought it wasn’t going to be awesome for you to come on your own,” I told him.

“No, it would have been nice, but it wouldn’t have been incredible,” Trevor told me. “You would have to be here for it to be incredible. I’m telling you.”

“I guess I’m just going to have to take your word for that one. I’ve gone with me everywhere in life, and I can tell you that there are some things that really aren’t incredible, even if I’m there,” I said.

“I don’t believe you,” he told me.

I laughed. We continued to walk hand in hand along the white sand, and I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath of the salty air. It was fresh and fierce all at the same time. It was hard for me to take a full breath in with how potent the salt was in the air, but it was also so fresh from the ocean breeze, I wanted to take the longest breath I could and just hold it in.

When I opened my eyes again, Trevor wasn’t beside me.
