“We are both responsible adults, and I am fiercely protective of what is mine.” He bussed her cheek. “I believe we shall be right as rain, but if we aren’t, we shall return home post haste.”
The fact that he always sought to include her in their adventures never failed to amaze her. Shortly after she’d discovered she was increasing, they’d worked a case in London for a duke whose daughter had gone missing. He was fast becoming a sought-after private retrieval specialist.
“I cannot wait.” Belle patted his cheek. “You certainly have kept your promise.”
“How could I not when I know I would receive a dressing down if I didn’t?”
Heat sank into her cheeks. “Well, I’m not exactly a harpy.”
“Indeed not!” His chuckle tickled through her chest. “I adore that managing side of you.” When he stroked his fingers along the edge of her bodice, she shivered. “I also adore the other sides of you.”
Letting the letters fall to the floor, she turned into his embrace. “Then, by all means, don’t let me prevent you from showing me just how much you love me.” As he claimed her lips in a gentle kiss that had more than enough heat behind it, she sighed and gave herself into his expert care. That was how it always went with them, and more often than not, they ended up in bed at some point during the week when he wasn’t out discreetly inquiring after potential clients.
But she wouldn’t have it any other way. It was amazing what a person could accomplish when they let go of the fears and restraints that previously held them captive.
