“Sure you do. My friends from college and the bar.” I tip my head and raise my eyebrows. “They’ve been over loads of times.” I won’t take any of her little excuses to avoid me.

She contemplates a moment, her face scrunching as she asks, “Will any of yourbadge bunniesbe there?”

Badge bunnies?

I blink.

Ohhhh…my loud guests. I’m definitely going to stop that shit.

It’s the first time she’s brought them up, without it being a noise complaint.

“Nope, just friends, in fact, it’s all couples except for us,” I explain, shamelessly eating a large piece of broken cookie off the floor. They are not to be wasted.

If I get my way, maybe one day she would be among the wives. I’ve gone every year to the Holiday Party alone, though not always leaving stag. Around the holidays, despite the snow, the pub gets busy and people warm up with company and whiskey.

She seems hesitant and open and closes her mouth several times.

I try to sweeten the deal. “There’s a Secret Santa gift exchange too.”

“I do like that pub…their food and there’s the gifts.” She chews on her lip.

“Please?” I beg. I move from my crouched squat onto my knees, holding my hands pressed together in front of me and flashing my eyelashes.

The blush the begging invokes is absolutely worth the submissive display.

She rolls her eyes. “Fine, fine. I’ll go!” She pushes me back and I fall onto my ass laughing.

I could kiss her.

But that has to wait.

Because I’ve got plans for you, Sugar.

CHAPTER3

Sugar

It’s been quiet. Too quiet. Derek’s room has been near silent night, holy night ever since I agreed to go with him to the party. I should be relieved but instead I’m suspicious. I have to check that he’s even there. That he’s alive. A welfare check for the cop roommate.

He responds after a few knocks, sweaty from whatever workout I’ve interrupted, wearing nothing but the smallest five-inch inseam shorts I’ve ever seen. He just needs a mustache and his aviators to complete the porn star ensemble.

“Oh, you’re home?!” I should’ve thought of an excuse to bother him before knocking but now I’m just staring with a gaping mouth.

“I am,” he grins through tight, labored breaths.

“It was just so…” I clear my throat as my mouth goes Mojave desert dry. “Quiet.”

If possible, his smile gets wider. He pushes the door open wider to expose more of himself, leaning on the frame.

No guests.

Huh.

“Would you prefer I make some noise?” he asks me,fartoo innocently.

He’s showing off that he’s alone. I furrow my brow as my suspicion only grows. Is he playing at good behavior to make sure I come to the party?

The party! Of course, the perfect excuse to be here.
