“I convinced him to sell,” Kimmie said as if it were no big deal. “But he said I had to find another property first.”

“Oh oh oh.” Ella stood, her ohs getting louder with each one. She was clearly excited about whatever idea she had. “I have something. It’s on West End. Just went on the market today…”

Ella’s voice drifted off as she saw Kimmie shaking her head. “Has to be as conveniently located as Lyric Tower.”

At that, Ella worked her bottom lip with her top teeth. She then turned back to her laptop. Kimmie did the same, and they sat in silence for several minutes while Kimmie searched. Soon, Kimmie found a perfect condo.

“Do you think he’d like The Gulch?” Kimmie asked, thinking out loud. It wasn’t in the middle of downtown—at least not the part of downtown where he lived now. But it was jam-packed with restaurants and nightlife.

“Is he into the singles scene?” Ella asked.

Kimmie shook her head distractedly. She hadn’t dived into Jesse’s personal life after they finished watching the Titans get their butts kicked in overtime. He’d been in a bad mood at that point. She’d grabbed a little information and gotten out of there so he could stew over whatever money the loss had cost him.

“No idea,” Kimmie said. “Maybe I need to meet with him again.”

“I think you have to schedule a lunch date. In the name of business, of course.”

“Of course. Let’s not call it a date, though.”

Ella didn’t respond to that, but Kimmie saw the smile on her coworker’s face as she pretended to be absorbed in whatever was on her laptop. Kimmie had plenty to focus on herself, namely lining up a lunch date.

First, though, she pulled some information on Jesse’s current place. She knew Lyric Tower pretty well and definitely knew that suite, but she needed the specs in front of her.

Then she took a deep breath and sent Jesse a quick, simple text.I found a few promising listings. Meet for lunch?

She held her breath as she waited for a response. Nothing. She tried to focus on checking her emails and gathering information for her other clients, but all she could think about was her phone and its complete absence of activity.

There was just so much at stake. She really needed to make this deal happen. It wouldn’t only get her out of the doghouse, but it might put her in the mansion. Or at least a nice cottage on the lake.

Her phone suddenly buzzed, jerking Kimmie from her thoughts. She looked down and saw the text on the lock screen. The entire text was there. No need to unlock.

I’m near your office. Be by to pick you up in ten.

Kimmie blinked, hardly able to believe what she was seeing. But after her blink, the words were still there. He wanted her to get in the car with him. A guy she’d just met.

“I might need your help,” Kimmie told Emma as she pulled her small compact mirror out of her purse. “1412 is picking me up.”

“Cool. Here? Do I get to meet him?”

“You have to go with me,” Kimmie said. “For safety.”

Ella just stared at her. She even turned in her seat again to stare harder. “You walked into his condo yesterday without even knowing much about him. Do you really need a chaperone?”

Ella knew Kimmie all too well at this point. She wasn’t afraid for her safety. She’d carefully researched him online before visiting him yesterday, after all. But she was terrified of saying something that would blow the deal for her. Or maybe she wanted to impress this guy for other reasons.

“Looks like he’s here,” Ella said. She nodded toward the big front window that overlooked the strip mall parking lot. A small spaceship was in the parking space closest to the door. At least that was how the sports car looked to her.

Kimmie was shocked at how hard her heart pounded as she closed the lid of her laptop and grabbed her purse. “His name is Jesse Fulton if I go missing.”

Ella rolled her eyes. “So melodramatic. He’s coming in.”

It took Kimmie a second to realize what Ella was saying. But she saw Ella looking out the window and figured it out. Jesse was coming in. To her office. The modest, crampedoffice she shared with Ella.

The door opened, and Kimmie’s breath caught. The sight of him in the doorway, looking over at the two of them… He had a friendly face, but his gaze was hard and a bit intense. It was like…he’d been hurt and put a wall up, but he still was a really kind person.

But most importantly, he was handsome. He had dark, curly hair and a strong, well-defined jawline. His build was slim but strong. Even through the long-sleeved shirt he wore, she could see signs of a strong, toned chest and muscular arms. Probably had a gym in that three-bedroom condo of his.

“Hi. I’m Ella Wayne.”
