“I know so.”

Her lips are a tight line, and she shifts on her feet. I rarely ever see Jordan this rattled.

“Hey,” I tell her. “I mean it. I know you’re going to be great. You’re going to do a lot of good and help a lot of people.”

“I just… I don’t know. I mean, it’s silly. I’m trained for this sort of thing,” she says. “It’s just, this place means so much to me and I don’t want to screw it up.”

“And you’re not going to,” I reply. “If I didn’t think you could handle this gig, I wouldn’t have let you come up here. But I know you’re going to be as amazing as you always are.”

She laughs. “I see what you did there. Snuck that one in,” she says. “But like I said, I’ll never get tired of hearing it.”

“Good. Now you just need to start believing it.”

She draws in a deep breath and closes her eyes as she breathes it out. I squeeze her shoulders gently, doing my best to will my strength and belief in her into her. As we stand there, the rumble of the buses driving into the compound rattles the windows. After a couple of minutes, she opens her eyes and nods, looking more sure of herself than she has since she woke up this morning.

“There’s my girl,” I say.

“Here I am.”

“Are you ready to go meet our guests?”

She nods. “I am.”

“Good. Let’s go,” I say.

I take her hand and together, we walk out of our cabin and into the bright sunshine of a clear, beautiful day. The air around us is cool and the musky aroma and piney scent of the forest fills my nose. Jordan looks up at me with her dazzling green eyes and I feel my pulse start to race. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day or a more perfect woman. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect life.

I don’t know what I did to deserve it but I’m beyond thankful. And I’m going to hold onto it with both hands and never let go.

The End.
