“Take it easy, dude. I was just talkin’ to her—”

“Last time. You put your hands on any of my people again and I swear to God, I’ll rip your arm off and beat you with it.”

The guy glares at me, trying to look hard, but it’s a weak effort. I can practically smell the fear wafting off him. He and his frat buddies turn and walk back toward their cabin, muttering to each other. I hear the word “psycho” used more than once and grin then turn to Jordan and when our gazes meet, I feel that hard jolt inside of me once more. All I seem able to think about is wanting to pull her to me and kiss her. More than anything, I want to feel those soft, full lips and that sweet, curvy pressed to mine.

“That was… intense,” she says, her voice high and airy.

“Are you all right?”

She nods. “I’m fine. He just startled me. That’s all. You certainly didn’t need to threaten to beat him with his own arm.”

She’s trying to chastise me for being so intense. I can't help but hear the note of amusement in her voice though or see the gratitude in her eyes. She looks at me as if she’s never had somebody stand up for her before.

“He shouldn’t have put his hand on you,” I reply.

We stand there staring at each other for a long moment, our gazes locked, the air between us heavy with a sense of anticipation. I’m fighting with everything fiber of my self-control. Fighting to keep myself in check, to keep from reaching out and kissing her with everything in me. She licks her lips and I find myself mesmerized by the pink tip of her tongue, fantasizing about having it in my mouth and on other, more sensitive, parts of me.

“Well… we should go catch up with the group,” she says.

“Yeah,” I reply. “Go on. Hustle and catch up with them.”

She nods and starts off but stops and turns back to me. “Thanks, by the way,” she says and gestures to the cabin. “For stepping in. I appreciate it.”

“Of course.”

She turns and heads off down the trail again, walking briskly to catch up with the group. I give one last look at the cabin and can feel the frat bros inside staring through the smoked glass at me. I can all but feel the hatred radiating from the cabin. It was a struggle to keep from belting the prick who put his hands on Jordan. Nobody touches what is mine. And make no mistake, she is most definitely mine. She just doesn’t know it yet. But she will. Soon enough, she’s going to understand that she is mine.

Turning away from the cabin, I start off down the path at a light jog, wanting to catch up to my group before they get themselves into any more trouble. Wanting to catch up to Jordan because I can’t get enough of looking at her luscious body.

“You’re going to get caught,” Sara says. “Seriously, Jordan, you shouldn’t go.”

“We’ve been cooped up here for two weeks now,” I complain. “I need to get out for a little while. I just need to have a little fun.”

Sara sits up on her bed looking at me with an expression of concern on her face. She gnaws on her thumbnail. I feel bad for thinking about sneaking out tonight and leaving Sara on her own, but I'm going stir-crazy.

“I get that. But if the staff finds out—”

“They won’t find out. Not unless you say something,” I say accusingly.

“I’m not going to say anything. You know I wouldn’t do that to you.”

I give her a soft smile. “Then there’s nothing to worry about.”

She watches me pulling on a pair of yoga pants and a thick hoodie. Sara keeps gnawing on her thumbnail as I pull a thick sock over one foot and then the other.

“Who are these guys anyway?” she finally asks.

“They’re staying in a cabin off one of our hiking trails.”

“Those guys?”

I laugh. “Who did you think it’d be? It’s not like there’s a lot of opportunity to meet guys around this place.”

That day out on the trail when Zane punched Malcolm and got into it with Director Ballard, I got to talking to Alex. He's twenty-one and goes to the University of Washington. He's really cute and we flirted a little bit but then he got a little pushy. That was when Director Ballard stepped in. I honestly thought they were going to fight right then and there but thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and both men went their separate ways.

Since that day though, I've met Alex in the woods a couple of times. We hung out, had a couple of beers, and talked. He's a really nice guy and I’ve enjoyed spending time with him. He doesn’t have the sort of effect Director Ballard has on me. When I see Alex, I don’t immediately get hot, wet, and start thinking all sorts of inappropriate things. He’s a good friend. He’s easy to talk to and he makes me laugh. And, since Director Ballard is like, twice my age, Alex is way more age-appropriate for me.
