That surprises me, although I feel the same. My father worked with the Russians. If this is real, it means they plan on breaking with them.

It only took my baby brother’s death to achieve it.

We all raise our hands in unison. “To Liam,” everyone says, their voices solemn.

My father turns to me and tries to speak, but his words are slurred.

I bend down, my ear next to his lips. “Don’t stay away. Come back and join the business.”

I shrug. “I run a hedge fund. My business is in investment, not construction.”

My father waves his good hand, ushering me closer. “Ethan needs you,” he says, struggling to enunciate the words. “He needs someone who understands strategy. He’s got a good heart, but he’s not a planner. You’re a planner.” He pats my hand with his good one, and I smile at him. “You know how to plan a war and win it.”

“A war?” I say, shocked at his open admission.

“A war. We need you, Harrison.”

I hesitate. I want revenge against the Russians for Liam’s death. But a war? “I’m sure Ethan will do fine.”

He shakes his head and grabs my arm. “Please, Harrison. Help him.”

I take in a deep breath, unsure of whether I want to help my brother. It’s not that I couldn’t arrange things to make it happen. My business partner, Chase, could run the shop while I take a long hiatus from the business. I could hold monthly meetings of the executive over Zoom, which has become so prominent given the pandemic.

I’m just not sure I want to.

“We’ll talk about it.”

That seems to make him happy, so I stand back up, watching my brother as he bullshits the men who joined us the night before the funeral.

I’ll stick around for a while. See how things progress.

Maybe Ethan and my father do need me.

My vision clouds and for a few moments, I allow myself the luxury of tears.

My little brother…

He was always a loving brother to me, happy that he had a big brother to look out for him.

The thought that some Russian mobster was responsible for his death…

I know what I have to do — I have to find a way into the Andropov empire and bring them down.

It isn’t my father’s fault that his own father compromised with the Mafia in order to conduct his business. That was just the way it’s done in New York City.

But — itwillbe my fault if I don’t try to get us out from underneath their thumbs, knowing what I know and with my brother having died because of one of them.

First item on my agenda before all that is revenge.

I will avenge my brother’s death.

I will do whatever it takes to make the bastards pay who killed him with their tainted drugs. I’ll get revenge on those who gave him the drugs and those who bought them.

I’ll find out who and get into their good graces. I’ll get dirt on them.

One thing is certain — within a year, the monster who is responsible for my brother’s death will be in federal custody, awaiting trial for murder.

Or dead.
