“Whatever the case, I’m afraid I can’t let you stay or be a member.” He turns to the receptionist. “Please return her cell and take her name off the list.”

The blonde searches through the collection of phones and returns my cell to me.

“Sorry, Natalia,” Chase says. “Have a nice night.”

He equally gently pushes me out the front entrance, and then the doorman closes the door behind me and stands looking at me, like he’s challenging me to try to enter once more.

I stand on the sidewalk, totally shocked that Harrison has done this.

He had me kicked out of the club!

I turn and check the street, deciding to flag down a passing taxi.

I won’t let him defeat me.

I just won’t…

To my surprise, Harrison appears from the alleyway beside the club and comes over to where I stand, his hands in his pockets. I can tell he’s upset by the way his mouth is tight and his eyes look angry.

“What the hell, Harrison. I thought with what’s happened between us, that you’d be happy to see me at Nuage. Instead, you have me kicked out? Without even speaking to me? I can’t believe you’d…”

He interrupts me, pulling me into his embrace and kisses me passionately. Of course, my traitorous body responds like a dog in heat, my flesh warming at his touch, my mind remembering our last encounter. I can’t help but kiss him back, reluctantly at first, but then meeting his passion with my own.

It surprises me.

What happened to my resolve?

It melted like an ice cube in a cup of hot coffee…

He breaks the kiss and strokes my bottom lip with his thumb, his forehead pressed against mine.

“I can’t let you stay. I can’t let anyone know that I know you.”

“Why? Am I such an embarrassment? Too low class?”

“No,no,” he said, his voice dark. “The opposite. It’s complicated.”

I don’t know what to say in response. I’d like to pound his chest, tell him he’s a monster, but I kissed him like he was damn Prince Charming come to rescue me.

Instead of throwing accusations at him, I take in a deep breath and try to tamp down my emotions.

He strokes my hair. “How did you find Nuage? Who invited you?”

I swallow. “Lisa. I met her at a bar, and we had a good laugh over some things we share in common. When I told her I wasseeing you, she invited me. I didn’t realize it was supposed to be a secret.”

He shakes his head. “It’s not that. It’s that I can’t. I can’t explain it now, but if you trust me, please. Never come back here again. If you keep seeing me, it has to be in secret.”

“Why? Would your parents disapprove?” I say with disdain.

He laughs sardonically and shakes his head. “It’s not that.” He sighs. “They aren’t the issue. It’s…” He pauses and I wonder what he’s afraid to admit — that he’s mobbed up? That he’s involved with gangsters and mobsters?

That he’s a fucking bank robber?

That it’s because of him that Sherri died of a massive drug overdose at his mansion? He doesn’t even know she was my friend…

“You can tell me,” I say, my voice soothing. “You can trust me.”

I say it with all earnestness. At least, it sounds earnest.
