The house is quiet. Ty has fallen asleep, and I make my way upstairs to put him down in the nursery his grandparents set up for him. I sit in the rocker thinking how much Savanna would love this.

I type a few messages to Bre and then delete them. Nothing seems adequate.

Me: My heart beats your name, and it will continue to, whether we’re together or apart.

God, that sounds so cheesy.

I hear voices downstairs. They’re probably back from where they spent the day. I walk down the staircase, and she meets my gaze. I have to get through to her, somehow.

“So, you two are taking Justin to the bonfire tonight. We oldies have had about enough of gallivanting for one day. Besides, I need to spend time with my other grandson,” Amanda announces. Lily agrees as she sinks into a chair in the living room.

“I don’t think I’ll be going either,” Bre tells them.

“Oh, nonsense. You’ve been hyping Justin up the last few days. He’ll be so disappointed if you’re not there,” Amanda says.

Bre’s eyes find mine when I reach the bottom of the stairs. “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of you, kitten,” I whisper as I pass her by.

Justin and Bre laugh and chatter as they sit next to me on the beach. The bonfire is raging before us. Couples sit around it. I have been to so many with Savanna, and this is just the second one with Bre. The last time she was with Nate.

Justin spots his girl. “Now that is my cue to leave,” he smirks at Bre, who shakes her head. He winks at me and struts off to the girl from earlier.

“Do you remember being that young and free?” I ask.

“I do, and I made stupid mistakes because of all that freedom,” she says coldly.

“Hey, I snuck this in.” I pull out a flask.

“You do realize that there is alcohol literally flowing in this place?” She motions to the cooler boxes.

“Not this kind. It’s special.”

She shakes her head.

“Come on, take a sip,” I nudge her in the side.

She pulls the flask from my hands and takes a sip. She scrunches her face up. “Brandy? That is so disgusting, Duke.”

She realizes her mistake and looks away. “Did you think that all these reminders would change anything?”

“I can only hope, Bre.”

She stands and starts walking away from the bonfire. I follow after her. “Bre, wait up.”

When we’re far enough away from the crowd, she stops, spinning around to gaze up at me. The wind whips her hair about, and I think of the sirens out at sea, luring sailors to their end.

I feel everything when I look at Brianna Kent, a desperate kind of love, guilt at what I put her through, and pure unadulterated lust to be inside her again. She lets out a soft sob, and when I try to reach for her, she steps away.

“Don’t,” she whispers, “Just don’t. I need you to let me go, Duke, let me go the way you always do.”

“I can’t.” My voice breaks. I wrap my arms around her, holding her close. “I can’t do that anymore, Bre.”

She looks up at me, and I lean down, my lips brushing against hers.

I feel her tense in my arms, but having her there is enough for me. “I miss you, Bre. I miss us.”

“There has never been anus,” she whimpers, pushing weakly at my chest.

“Brianna, I fucking love you.” My mouth drops to hers, and I nip her bottom lip. She lets out a soft moan before I slip my tongue between them. I sweep my tongue over hers, and we find our rhythm. She tastes of sin and salvation. Everything I have always had and never realized. Her arms wrap around my neck, and her fingers tug at my hair, pulling me closer.
