He stops when he opens the car door for me. “You clean up pretty nicely, kitten,” he smirks.

“Gee, thanks.” I roll my eyes.

“Seriously, you look gorgeous,” he tells me, and I flush.

I look away at his brother’s beamer and breathe a sigh of relief. “Did you think I was bringing, Daisy?” he laughs.

Daisy is his bike, by the way. One he fixed up on his own.

“Wouldn’t put it past you.” I retort.

I climb into the front seat, and he gets into the driver’s side. The leather smells so fucking good.

“I better not regret this, Bre.” he looks over at me, and there is something in his eyes I don’t quite understand.

“You won’t. There’ll be plenty of pretty girls to entertain you.” I turn on the stereo, and sing along toSnoop Dogg. Denton glances at me shaking his head.

Anika Carlisle’s house is massive, no scrap that, it’s a mansion. There is a valet service when we pull up. Teenagers are on the lawn, and when we enter the foyer, it is like the cafeteria at lunchtime. Packed to the brim. Denton grabs hold of my hand, and there’s a spark, static, that has me pulling my hand away. He frowns.

We weave our way through the crowd, and by the scowl on his face, I can tell that he isn’t happy about this at all. I take his hand, squeezing it, and he just shakes his head.

We make our way to the backyard, where a pool party is underway—music booms from speakers everywhere. I spot Miranda, the girl who invited me. “Let’s go say hi,” I shout above the music, nodding in the direction of the sexy bikini-clad girl. I feel so overdressed. What the hell was I thinking? This isn’t prom.

Denton instructs me to walk in front of him, and I feel the heat rising to my cheeks when I get some attention and whistles.

“Come on in here, Brianna.” One of the quarterbacks shouts from the pool when we come to a stop outside a pool house, causing me to giggle.

Denton’s shoulders tense. “Just be careful, Brianna. I am serious. Hang out with your friends but don’t get into shit.”

“Oh my God, you made it.” Miranda shrieks when she spots me. “Hi Denton, I don’t believe we’ve been formally introduced. I’m Miranda.” She flirts.

“Oh, I know who you are,” he tilts his head away, focusing on the crowd.

I spot a shirtless and fucking hot Kevin in the pool. He’s kissing a girl I am sure is not Anika, his girlfriend. Their mouths clash and collide, and she rubs herself against him. I lick my lips and feel a tightening in my belly. Oh, to be kissed like that.

“Why don’t you just go over there? I bet he’s open toanythingright about now.” Denton growls.

“What?” I snap. “The hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Just go play with your friends.” He turns his back to me.

Miranda offers him a drink. He declines. “I’m driving.”

I glare at him. “You’re such a buzzkill.”

Miranda offers me a plastic cup, and when I take the first sip, I know it is laced with some hard stuff. I drink it anyway. Denton has made his way to a lounger and sits there, scrolling through his phone. Miranda is overly attentive to him, and instead of brushing her off, he entertains it. For some odd reason, it annoys me.

Miranda drapes herself on his lap, and I sink into a loveseat. The quarterback that shouted for me before climbs out of the pool, wipes himself off and settles next to me, a plastic cup in his hand. What the hell, why not enjoy myself?

“I’m Hunter,” he says, “It’s good to finally meet the pretty girl under the bleachers.”

“You noticed?” I say then regret the way that sounds. Confident girls don’t ask stupid questions.

“A guy would be crazy not to,” He smirks, his damp, dark hair falling over his eyes. He is fucking gorgeous. Not Kevin, but attractive nonetheless.

My eyes move to Denton, who now has his tongue down Miranda’s throat. He looks directly at me, not breaking the kiss. I don’t like the way he’s looking at me or how it makes me feel.

“You okay?” Hunter asks. “You seem kind of distracted.”
