“But it is so different. Denton and I hurt people we claimed to love.”

“Yes, yes you did, but Savanna also knew that you both tried to change it by ending things years ago after you lost your daughter.”

I wipe the tears from my eyes. “Anna knew about it, and she still loved me. How?”

“She knew who you were, inside. Bre, it’s time to forgive yourself. Savanna forgave you. You’ve had enough hurt in your life. How about you cherish this one moment?”

She stands and offers me her hand. I take it, and we walk back to where everyone stands waiting.

She takes my hand and places it in Denton’s. “Be happy. Life is too short to relive the same regrets over and over again.”

I look up at Denton, and when he leans down to kiss my lips, I don’t pull away. Instead, I wrap my arms around his waist and let myself pour my heart and soul into that one kiss.

That night we take a blanket out to the beach and make love under the stars. I give myself to him, body, mind and soul. We are two broken souls finding solace in each other. His thrusts are untamed, our bodies clashing and colliding to the sound of the waves. We talk until the first light appears on the horizon, and he then fucks me again until sunrise, reminding me that I will only ever belong to him.

It took some convincing to get her to marry me a couple of days after I proposed, but I pride myself on being the master of persuasion. We waited long enough to be together, so I don’t see any reason why we have to have a long, drawn-out engagement. All I need is her walking down a sandy aisle toward me.

When I hear the local band playing the traditional wedding song softly in the background, I can’t turn around soon enough. Bre wears a short white dress, her hair free with just a few flowers pinned in it. The music stops, and she walks toward me alone because that is what felt right to her.

The moment is perfect, the ocean waves playing in the background, sunlight beaming off the waves behind her. She grins as the sea breeze whips her hair around. And when she reaches me, I hold her face between my hands and kiss her even before the ceremony begins. There is nothing traditional about the two of us, and it is no use pretending that there is.

The Officiant takes us through the ceremony, and when it’s done, I kiss my bride again.

“I’m in love with you, Mrs. Duke.”

“I’m in love with you.” She wraps her arms and legs around me and kisses me so ferociously it makes my soul happy.

"Is there anything like dancing barefoot under the stars, the sand between your toes, the sound of the waves?” she asks as we dance together later that night.

“There is. I think dancing with the most stunning woman in the world, and all the rest of those things you said is better.”

Our families and some of their friends sit about on plush comfortable cushions in a cozy lounge area.

“I have a gift for you,” she tells me and kisses my lips. She walks to the stage, and a band member hands her a guitar. She puts the straps over her head, looking at me across the room.

“A guy I knew once told me he’ll pay anything to hear me sing. I figured I’d hold him to that.” Everyone laughs, but I’m mesmerized by the fact that she’s singing in public, for me.

“Every beat of this here heart,

Belonged to you right from the start,

‘Cause it was always, oh, it was always,

Everything that we've been through.

All that brought me back to you,

‘Cause it was always, oh, it was always,

Always you.

I never loved as hard as I do you,

Never hated, never fought through,
