Margie:

How about a total heiress party girl?

Juliette:

That works too.

Margie:

I mean, this was the girl who ended up getting on top of the bar at Bungalow 8 and taking off her top as she danced to the music, then brought up a bartender and proceeded to give him a lap dance. All in front of cameras, press, and eager club goers.

Juliette:

But that was before she left for Paris. Party goers and social butterflies are noticing a change in young Eliza that they hadn’t seen before. This time around, she seems a bit subdued.

Margie:

Maybe subdued is the wrong word. The Wild Child of New York City is still there. But she’s seemed to … grow up a little bit.

Juliette:

That’s exactly right. People are downright surprised when she shows up at a party now at 8 pm instead of midnight. And she limits her drinking to just a few glasses of champagne. And then calls it a night at a reasonable hour. Without taking anyone home.

Margie:

In fact, I don’t think we’ve had any high profile dating that’s happened in the week that Eliza has been in town, have we?

Juliette:

Not at all. I mean, there have been many people who have commented to the media that they were going to … shall we say, try? Star pitcher for the New York Nympho’s, Ortiz Julieta was quoted as saying on camera that he was “gonna bag that heiress bitch,” and he has tried, but doesn’t appear to have been successful yet.

Margie:

I think he was at the Blush Magazine party last night, trying to get Eliza to give him the time of day. Before she left for Paris, she definitely would’ve given him the time of day. And a whole hell of a lot more most likely. But this time around? She laughed, flirted, and then shut him down!

Juliette:

In fact, the two main influences that seem to be present right now in Eliza’s life are actually her two stepfathers, Derek Stackford and Carter Blake. Both men it seems are giving her investment advice and both men are competing with each other for whom she is going to listen to.

Margie:

But there’s been no sight of her stepmother, Wanda. In fact, many people are thinking that for the first time, Eliza is taking her role of steward of the family fortune quite seriously. I mean, when someone keeps company with bankers and traders more than they do with models and playboys, it’s usually because they’re turning a new leaf.

Juliette:

Not that Derek Stackford or Carter Blake are any saints, but both of these two eligible bachelors may be giving Eliza something that no other man in New York City has been able to offer just yet.

Margie:

What’s that, Juliette?

Juliette:

Peace of mind.

Margie:

Well, on that note, it’s time for a commercial break. Stay tuned and when we return, we’ll be talking to Carter Kane, creator of the virtual reality sex toy that has taken the country by storm. Thanks again for tuning in!

Chapter Nine

Eliza

I know, I know.

I shouldn’t be here. But what the hell; I just had to come. Carter hasn’t called or left me any messages after what happened in my apartment, and what can I say? The man has left me intrigued. It’s been two days since our impromptu meeting in my apartment and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about these two men … the ones I just can’t stop calling daddy.

We’re supposed to have lunch tomorrow, the three of us, but I just couldn’t resist the urge to drop in and visit Carter. Ever since he showed up at my door, casual smile and piercing eyes, I haven’t been able to get him off my mind. I hate my stepmother’s guts, but there’s one thing that I just gotta give to her: she has quite the taste when it comes to men. I mean, between Carter and Derek, I truly don’t know which one to choose.

So, yeah, don’t think I swung by Carter’s office because he interested me the most. It’s nothing like that. I just think that Carter Blake is the most approachable one or, if you want me to say it like that, the cool headed one. I can see myself sitting across from Carter and having a rational conversation while with Derek it’s all fire and thunder. Usually that isn’t a problem for me, but things tend to change slightly when you have a $250 billion dollar fortune to manage. I mean, I’m only 25 and I’m the richest person on Earth. I gotta be smart about this, or else people will rip me off left and right.

Walking across the cavernous lobby, my heels clicking across the marble floor, I make a beeline toward what seems to be the receptionist’s desk.

“May I help you?” a redheaded woman asks me, her horn-rimmed glasses on her forehead. She’s sitting outside of Carter’s office behind a massive desk, and I assume she’s his secretary. She’s a beautiful woman, probably in her mid-thirties, and judging by the look in her eyes I’d say she’s as loyal of an employee as Carter can get.
