“Huh?” Mac pulled his gaze off Aubrey’s backside, turning his attention back to me.

Not like I could blame the guy. Aubrey’s rear was about the nicest thing I’d seen in a long, long time. Didn’t matter that she had on jeans and a thick, shearling coat. One glimpse of an ass that fine was all you needed.

“Just making sure she got in alright,” he said. Mac adjusted the brim of his hat and turned his attention westward. “Shall we?”

“I do believe we shall,” I said, shaking my head in amusement.

“Bye, George!” Henry called out one last time, waving so hard to the llama that I had to grip his ankles extra tight.

We started off. I was giving my brother a hard time for ogling Aubrey, but truth be told, I’d been eyeing her all the same. She’d almost seemed out of place for rural Maryland.

I glanced over my shoulder, my attention going to the lights in the kitchen on the first floor of the two-story house. We were too far away for me to make out anything other than the shape of two figures moving around here and there.

“Interesting woman,” Mac said, his eyes on the horizon as we made our way off the land of Downing Farm.

“Yeah, interesting.” I chuckled.

“Get your mind out of the gutter,” Mac said, glancing in my direction.

“What?” I asked. “I don’t recall saying a single thing, big bro. Maybeyou’rethe one whose mind is in the gutter.”

“BS.”

“What’s that term called? Projection?”

“Not projection. More like predictability. I know how your mind operates.”

“Yeah, especially right now because you’re thinking the same thing.”

Mac cleared his throat, glancing over at me once more.

“You know, it’s OK to admit that a woman’s attractive,” I said. “I know you’re Mr. Stoic, but no shame in admitting a beautiful woman is beautiful.”

“What’s boo-tee-ful?” Henry asked.

Mac and I shared a look that made it clear that neither of us knew quite how to answer the question.

“It’s when someone or something is nice to look at,” Mac said.

“Like George?” Henry spoke with excitement, as if he couldn’t wait to use his new word.

“Uh, sure,” Mac said. “I suppose George had a certain kind of beauty.”

“Especially the way his tongue hung out of his mouth,” I added. “Just breathtaking.”

“Breathtaking,” Henry repeated, trying yet another new word on for size.

I had to laugh at how damn cute the little man was. Even more so, it was a reminder of how brainy Henry was shaping up to be. He loved learning new words and was always asking us to read him countless books before bed.

“God, I’m hungry as hell,” I said. “Thinking I might skip the turkey and go right to the pie.”

“Can we?” Henry asked, eagerness in his voice.

“Ican;youcan’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m a grown-up and you’re not. Simple, right?”
