The twins, their minds one-track as always, jumped up from their seats and let out happy cries as they headed out with Aggie.

“Give me a shout if you need anything!”

With that, they were gone. My brothers and I were alone with Aubrey, a strange sort of tension falling over the group.

“Alright,” Aubrey said, leaning forward. “What’s up?”

“Simple,” I said. “We’ve got a job for you—if you’re interested.”

Chapter 10

Mac

There was no doubt in my mind that she found all of us attractive, she didn’t hide it in the slightest. Her eyes jumped from me to my brothers, her gaze occasionally dipping down to our chests or arms. There was also no doubt we all felt the same way about her.

We had business to discuss, however. That didn’t leave any sort of time for flirting or bullshit.

“I want to know why our winter’s looking packed, Mac,” Adam stated. “There something you’re not telling us?”

I shifted in my seat, crossed my arms, and tucked my hands underneath my biceps. I’d misspoken, shared information that I hadn’t been ready to let out.

“It’s a mission,” I said. “One that we’re all going to need to be on.”

Adam’s eyes flashed, Marcus and Tyler sitting up in their seats.

“A mission?” Adam asked. “You mean, like a real-deal mission? The kind we haven’t done since we got the twins?”

I sighed, shaking my head. “Didn’t mean to mention it now.”

Marcus narrowed his eyes. “And you’ve been keeping this to yourself? I thought we were a team?”

“Hold on, I didn’t agree to anything yet. And the reason I didn’t mention it is because I’m still waiting on the details. It accidentally sort of slipped out now.”

“Boys, boys,” Aubrey said. “If you’re going to fight, there’s plenty of space in the backyard.”

She smiled as she spoke, but her words reminded all of us that we were there to talk to her aboutherjob, not ours.

“Fine,” Marcus said. “We’ll table the conversation about the mission, for now.”

“Deal,” I replied.

Aubrey took a sip of her tea, leaning back in her seat with her hands wrapped around the big mug. There was something about her—maybe it was the way she was totally at ease with all of us, four men who weren’t the easiest in the world to get along with—that was irresistible.

“I have to admit, I’m curious about this mission. I was raised on this land, and I’ve never heard anything ranch-related referred to as a mission. So, what exactly is it that you all do?”

“We run a party clown operation,” Adam said with a smirk on his face. “You know, dress up, entertain the kids. We call the gigs missions because it sounds cooler.”

Aubrey laughed, nearly spitting out her tea. “You almost had me there for a second.”

“You’ll have to excuse my jackass brother,” Marcus said. “He’s got a sixth sense for when it’s the exact wrong time to make a joke.”

“We’re military,” Tyler said. “Well, were. All of us have been in the service at one point or another.”

“So what does that mean? You’re farmers who moonlight in mercenary work?”

I leaned forward. “Not quite. We run a side operation called Exfil Inc.”

“Exfil?” she asked.
