“More permanent? What do you mean?”

“I mean you’d live here with us, full time. You could have that big room on the top floor all to yourself if you want. Maybe put Aggie in charge of Downing, check in on her and the animals every day if you need to. How it’ll all look, I don’t know. The point is that we all want you to be here with us. That is, if you want it, too.”

I placed my hands on her arms.

“I’m not good with words, Aubrey. But I love you. We all do. If you want, we can start something real, the five of us, together.”

She smiled, tears forming in her eyes. Silence took hold, and I waited eagerly for whatever she might have to say next.

“Marcus, I—”

It was all she got out before abangcut through the air.

“What the hell was that?” she asked.

I knew right away what it was, a sound that I’d heard hundreds of times before.

I jumped forward, diving onto Aubrey and pinning her to the ground.

“Stay down!” I shouted. “We’re under attack!”

Chapter 33

Tyler

Abarrage of bullets sounded out, sending me diving into the snow face-first. I did it just in time as another round of gunfire slammed into the side of the house.

“Shit!” I reached into my coat, taking my pistol out of the holster and flipping around to face the falling snow and the nearly black sky overhead. I flicked off the safety and took aim into the flurries, spotting a pair of vans pulling toward the house and firing off a quick triplet of shots.

More gunfire came from the vans. I stayed down, the shots hitting far above me.

This was it; the fight was here.

I rolled over onto my belly, army crawling forward and getting away from the gunfire.

“Mac!” I shouted. “Get your ass out here!”

Before I even finished the sentence, one of the side doors to the house opened. Mac stepped out with a semi-automatic rifle in his hands, raising it to shoulder-level and firing round after round at the vans. One of the men piling out dropped, Mac’s shot hitting home and relief washing over me at the sight of one of the bad guys getting taken out.

I took advantage of the chaos, crawling toward Mac and hurrying into the house. Once inside, I fired off a few more rounds at the vans, Mac shutting the door behind us.

“What’s the status?” I asked.

“Good question. Adam!”

I sat up and Mac gave me a look over. “You’re hit.”

“Huh?” I glanced up and down my body. Sure enough, a shot had gone through my upper arm. I quickly peeled off my coat to see that, to my relief, it was a through and through shot through the fatty part of my skin. “Damn it!”

“Can you still shoot?” he asked.

“You just saw me do it, big brother.”

“Good, because we’re going to need all the hands we can get.”

Adam hurried into the room, a shotgun in his hands.

“What’s the status?” Mac asked.
