“But what about the guys?”

“They’re fine. Both wounds were surface level. We’re going to do a little stitching up and, with a little luck, you’ll all be out of here at the same time.”

“What about the blood work?” I asked. “Was that really necessary?”

“Standard protocol. Might as well check everything while you’re here, right?”

As she spoke, I began to come to my senses.

“Listen,” I said. “Sorry to be a brat. It’s just that less than two hours ago I was in a gun battle. Those kinds of things have a way of jangling up your nerves.”

“I’ll have to take your word for it. Anyway, the results from the bloodwork should be coming in any moment. I’ll let you know when they do.”

“Thanks again.”

She smiled at me one more time before turning toward the door and heading out. Adam and Aggie stepped into the room as she left, each of them holding one of the twins.

“There are my dudes!” I said, sitting up.

“Miss Aubrey!” Henry held out his little arms toward me, a big smile on his face. I took him, Hattie hugging my head from Adam’s arm.

“OK!” I said. “Kinda need to breathe!”

They set the kids down, the pair wasting no time exploring the small hospital room.

“How you feeling?” Aggie asked, looking me over with eager eyes.

“Fine, I think. Still feeling like I’m on the set of an 80’s action movie, but other than that, not bad. How’re the boys?”

“Doing great,” Adam said, sitting down in the chair next to the bed. “Getting stitched up right now. Cops are all over the property. God, the paper’s going to have a field day with this one.”

I thought about Janet, hoping that this little story might give her something more interesting to write about than my love life.

“Listen,” I said. “I wanted to thank you guys.”

“Even me?” Aggie asked. “Hell, I was downstairs watchingEncantowhile it was all going on. We didn’t even know anything was happening.”

“You were with the kids, making sure they were safe. And because of you, they’re not going to have to deal with the trauma of having lived through a damn warzone.” I turned to Adam. “And you guys… you kept me safe. I don’t know what to even say to that.”

“Just doing what needed to be done,” Adam said. “We’re family. Or something like it, at least.”

Before the conversation could go on any further, a knock sounded at the door.

“Come in!” I called out.

The door opened, the doctor who’d taken my bloodwork stepping through. He was a younger man, tall and blonde with a prematurely wise look to his face, his eyes behind wire frame glasses.

“Miss Downing,” he said. “How are you feeling?”

“Good, all things considered.”

“Excellent.” He let out his breath, clasping his hands behind his back. “Would it be alright if we spoke in private?”

“Uh, why?”

“I just wanted to go over your test results with you.”

Adam and Aggie both glanced at me, their expressions seeming to say, “we’ll stay if you want.”
