The name felt like home, like a place I’d known for a lifetime, but I didn’t understand why. The pain reflected in his eyes told stories of sorrow and heartache. I took his hand, looking at the fresh wound as it bled. “I’m so sorry, Damien.”

“It’s ok,mea luna.” His other arm came around me, pulling me into him. He held me tightly, as if he were afraid that if he let me go, I would disappear.

The complex and conflicting emotions overwhelmed my senses. “What’s happening to me, Damien?”

He didn't say anything at first.

"What am I? Some witch seeing what happened in the past or something?" Morbid humor was all I had to try to hold onto what little sanity I had left. It felt as if I was losing myself to it all between Marcus and these visions. “Marcus told me you lost your mate. Am I having visions of her or something?”

Could I be psychic? I mean, he was a vampire who fought creatures called darklings. A psychic was a bit more believable than the truths I’d been shown firsthand.

“I need to take you to Selene.” He released me to head to his bathroom and grabbed some gauze and a roll of bandage to his wound.

I hurried after him. "Stop. Let me help, please.” I took them from him and gently laid the gauze in his hand before carefully wrapping the bandage around it. “Who’s Selene?”

The moment his hand was tended to, he headed for the closet to get dressed. His clothes ruffled as he changed. “It’s… complicated, but she can help explain what’s happening to you.”

I sat there a moment. The images of him from the vision and him here now blurred over each other and pain stabbed behind my eyes. I scrunched my forehead and rubbed my eyes.

He emerged from the closet, pulling a shirt over his head. “Just try to relax. I know it isn’t easy.”

That was an understatement. I was struggling to keep a hold of what was real and what wasn’t.

“You need to eat before we see her though."

“I’m not really hungry—”

He squeezed my hand. “Please,Mea luna. Try. For me. You’re so thin...”

I sighed. “Ok.”

As we reached the foot of the stairs, the sound of pots and pans and a woman humming echoed from the kitchen down the hall. Who was here other than us?

“Lord Damien!” exclaimed a voice as we entered the kitchen, and I remained hidden behind him, nervous of meeting whoever greeted him.

The tiniest old woman stood in the kitchen, cooking breakfast. The smell of bacon and freshly baked biscuits filled my nose and my mouth watered. She stopped only to walk toward us, hands high as she came up to Damien. He lowered himself naturally as she took his face in her hands, kissing both of his cheeks.

“Good morning,Mitera,” he responded politely, kissing her cheek tenderly.

She cupped his face as if inspecting him closely. A thick Scottish accent painted her tongue as she spoke. “Are mah eyes deceivin’ meh? Ye look like ye’ve finally gotten yerself a good night’s rest fer once.”

Her eyes caught sight of me, and she beamed. “O’, whit a ray o’ sunshine! She’s beautiful, Lord Damien!” She paused before she hurried back to prepare our breakfast. “Ye sit yerself doon now, darlin’, get comfortable. Ah hope yer ready fer a nice warm meal. I ken ye’ve had yerself a rough week, but ye can rest easy noo, darlin’.”

I smiled, unable to resist. The air around her was warm and inviting and it had an odd way of making me feel relaxed and happy. It was like she cast a spell on me, pulling me into whatever sunshine she radiated.

“Lord Damien?” I asked, cocking my head to look up at him. It was just like the doctor at the apartment complex. He’d called him that as well. “That’s the second time someone’s called you that.”

“It’s a long story.” A crooked grin cracked across his face as his eyes avoided me. “This is Ethel, but we call herMitera. Her family has served and cared for mine for many generations. This is James’ grandmother I told you about.”

“She knows as well?” I whispered, looking up at him.

He smiled, giving a light nod.

“Poor child, do ye no’ have any clothes of yer own here?” she asked, looking at me in Damien’s shirt and boxers. “Lord Damien, she cannae walk around in yer underwear!”

I grunted a laugh under my breath as the little woman scolded him. It was so sweet how he acted with her; a side of him I’d yet to see. It was difficult to resist the laughter that swelled in my chest.
