I swallowed my words. Intimate.

He tensed. “Before you think it, no. It’s only ever been you. I haven’t taken another female to bed.Ever. I refuse to take from anywhere but the wrist, I just… didn’t feel right doing it now that you appeared. It felt like I was betraying you.”

“Then why can’t you feed…” I was a little nervous asking, still fearful of what it would be like, but I wanted to give him what he needed. “Why can’t you feed from me?”

“I’d hoped we could, but when Selene said that your body was struggling to sustain your powers—” He grimaced, his eyes falling from me. “I can’t risk losing you. I don’t want to risk taking from you when you may not have the ability to give.”

“Then I’m useless to you,” I muttered. I could do nothing to help him in this body.

“No, that’s not—” Damien’s phone went off in his pocket, and he grabbed it. His voice was sharp as a knife as he answered. “What is it?”

I could faintly hear the voice on the other end of the line as they spoke. Damien worked his jaw in frustration as he listened.

“I’ll be there shortly.” He hung up, shoving his phone in his pocket. “It’s Cole. He won’t talk, so we need to get up there. I guess your training begins now.” I winced at the way the words left his lips. He wasn't happy with Selene's orders to train me.

I lifted my hand to his face. “I’ll be ok. I’ve got the best teacher I could ask for.”

His eyes warmed, his hand rising to overlap mine, and he turned to lay a tender kiss on my palm. “I won’t lose you, not again. I’ll find a way to help your body with the stress of the magic.”

“I know you will.” I kissed him. I shouldn't give myself this hope. I knew better than to cling to any hope I’d been given in the past. It never amounted to anything more than disappointment.

Damien took my hand when I turned, pulling me back. “You’re not useless to me,mea luna. I want you to know that. You don’t know how much you do for me simply by being. Just to look into your eyes again, to hold you again; it’s more than I could ever ask for, to have you at my side.”

He pulled me close to him, and I melted into his embrace. “Don’t think I haven’t forgotten your feeding though. If you need to feed, you need to do it.”

“We’ll talk about that later.”

He led me toward the stairwell, passing his hand through the air beside us, and as he did the candles around us doused, casting us into darkness. The familiar cold air swirled around us, and we emerged into another room.

It resembled the room I awoke in when I was first brought to the apartment complex. There wasn’t much in terms of furniture, just the bare necessities, like it was meant for someone to use as a temporary place to stay. Many rooms like this seemed to reside in this building, most of them vacant, and I hadn’t seen anyone other than Damien and the group here.

“This is one of our headquarters. We have two. This one is primarily used by The Order for interrogations, and as a formal base in the city,” Damien explained as we walked out of the room and down the hall. “The Order’s numbers have dwindled, so now we offer these rooms to warriors and civilians seeking refuge."

“Are there other immortals here now?”

He jerked his head in a nod. “A few are currently staying here, some displaced families and warriors.”

His pace was quick, and I struggled to keep up with the pace he made. “Selene mentioned The Order as well. What is that?”

“The Order is the main force within the immortals that Selene commands. Males and females from each clan with potential are trained in combat.” I followed him as we walked, listening to him explain. “The others remain as civilians, meant to thrive and birth more of our kind to fight in Selene’s battles. Barrett, Zephyr, Vincent, and I are the acting heads.”

“With you residing as king.” I cracked a mischievous grin as I looked up at him. I elongated my neck, faking an accent as I spoke like a lady of the courts of old times. “Lord Damien, king of the immortals,Lord of darkness.”

He slammed his hand against the wall, blocking my path and pressing me up against the wall. I swallowed, feeling the dark rolling power he contained as he held me in place, and my heart leapt.

He lowered himself to my ear. “You keep talking like that and I may just enjoy making you call out my title in our bed.”

Our bed. I bit my lip, heat flooding my body and stemming into my cheeks. His hand came to my hip, sliding up along my waist, his thumb brushing just under my breast. My breath hitched, but I forced my composure, meeting his gaze, a coy grin curving my lips. “As you wish, milord,” I said, my voice delicate as I curtsied, dragging it out.

He swiped for me, but I ducked under his arm, giggling as I slipped from his grasp. He smiled and followed after me.

We eventually reached the stairwell, heading down the same flight of stairs he once used to carry me to the medical room. Barrett and the others greeted us at the door where they were interrogating Cole. Barrett stood just outside the door, jaw clenched as he wiped his hands with a rag. My throat tightened at the sight of the blood smeared on his skin.

I felt dizzy the moment I stepped into the doorway. Cole rested on his knees, slouched forward. His wrists were held up in shackles, chains reaching up to the ceiling suspending him. Anxiety flooded me, and for a moment, I could see myself sitting where he was, his wounds similar to my own.

That had been me.

When Damien mentioned they were interrogating Cole, he didn’t say anything about this. But I guess this should be no surprise to me. Whether I supported it or not, this was a war, and Cole not only had information they needed, but he was a traitor.
