“Did you get any sleep at all kid?” Gunther asked, worry in his eyes. I appreciated that the man cared for me, but I didn’t want to worry him.

“I got sleep, just low on blood.” It was only a partial lie; I truly was low on blood. I knew I needed to feed before the fight, but I also knew that only one source would top off my power to the strongest extent. I was only hoping she’d be willing, given the situation.

“Well, you need to feed. We can’t have you weaker than necessary. Not when we’re about to walk into hundreds of armed Hunters that have been trained to kill.”

One of the things I most appreciated about Gunther was he didn’t sugarcoat things. We were walking into hell and he made sure I knew it.

“I’ll be sure to feed, you don’t need to worry.”

Gunther scrunched his forehead and I knew he was about to say something I didn’t want to hear, too close to something my own dad would say and so I interrupted before he could speak.

“Where am I at? What do I need to do?”

All the students that had been chosen had been through thorough details of what their roles would be and the goal of this mission, but no one had been told where in the attack they were placed. I guessed that was done on purpose, they didn’t want anyone running off because they realized their chances of making it out alive were slimmer than others.

“The front line. You’ll be leading the attack with multiple members of the Guard, as well as some of the stronger Drax and Shifters.” Gunther paused, debating how to say his next words. “The girl will be with you all.”

I wanted to say I was surprised, but I was done being taken off guard by what the men and women in charge were willing to do to keep their power. We were all right when we had anticipated that Halley would be at the center of this fight, our so-called leaders hoping she would be taken out, even though she was our best chance at surviving.

Nodding my head, I asked Gunther for more information, and once he was done explaining the situation, the trucks began loading up. I eyed each person, seeing pride in some, determination in others, but mostly fear. My eyes searched out red hair against my will and I spotted Halley standing between the three men who seemed to constantly surround her. Knox and Eli were called, needing to get in the truck that would take them to the back of the fight, where they could help without being in harm’s way.

Eli pulled Halley close, softly pressing his lips to hers and looking at her with such strong emotion that I almost wanted to turn away. Knox pressed his hands to Halley’s shoulders, giving her words, before he nodded and stepped away. I couldn’t help but notice that the stoic man didn’t seem as emotionless around her as before.

Both men walked away, leaving Halley and Madden alone. The two stared at each other deeply, before turning towards me. Walking this way, I wasn’t surprised to see no fear in either of their eyes, only anger at the unfairness of all this.

“Are we ready?” Madden said and I simply nodded, the three of us entering our truck. Three Guard members joined us, along with two of Madden’s strongest wolf Shifters and one Drax. None of us spoke as the truck began to pull away from the academy. We all simply sat, wondering if these would be our last moments.

? ? ?

The truck rolled to a stop and I took in our surroundings through the small windows of the vehicle. We hadn’t drive for long, only about an hour. The landscape was the same that surrounded Willow Grove, but instead of the emptiness that our shield created, a large compound stood in the middle. Steel beams supported the large building, clearly intended to protect whatever was inside. The building was four stories high and spanned a great length.

According to the information Zachariah, Knox, and Councilman Jay had seen, we would be entering through a door in the back. Our group would lead, with others behind us. Once we entered, there was a large, open area on the entire first floor where they trained. We were instructed to hold our ground there and wait for the Hunters to convene. There was no intention to sneak into their quarters and massacre them in their sleep. We weren’t fucking monsters like they were, killing innocent people.

As the other trucks surrounded us, everyone began getting out, preparing for their role. Our truck unloaded, Madden standing protectively close to Halley, glaring at anyone that dared to look her way. I knew his only intention was to keep Halley from harm’s way, but I worried what that meant for his ability to attack. He was one of our strongest Shifters, he couldn’t just stand by her side. Plus, I had seen what she was capable of. If this was anything like last time, I’d be more worried to be near her when she exploded.

The members of the Guard began speaking and I knew I was running out of time to feed before we went in. Turning towards Halley, I began speaking lowly, not wanting any nosy fuckers to overhear the problem I was having.

“I need to feed, princess.”

Both Halley and Madden turned towards me with those words. Madden with a glare in my direction, Halley with understanding. I was glad I didn’t have to go into explanation.

Halley maneuvered out of Madden’s arms, but he grabbed her wrist before she could come to me. My fangs bared at the move, instincts refusing to let someone come between me and my source.

“Feed from someone else, Drax. She needs to be strong.” I ignored the growly voice, focusing on Halley, hoping she would see that I was hanging on by a thread here. I could feed from someone else, but it wouldn’t do it. Unless Madden let me feed from him.

“Let me feed from you then, fucker. I need someone strong.” My voice didn’t hold back the tension I was feeling and Madden matched me.

“Like hell you’ll feed from either of us. Go find someone fucking else.”

Before the two of us could get into it, Halley pressed her hand to his chest, and what do you know, the asshole actually calmed down. If I didn’t know better, I’d be convinced there was an enchantment to make someone obsessed with you.

“It’s fine. It won’t weaken me and he needs to be at his strongest.” Halley’s words were calm, but I could see the pulse in her neck and knew that it was all a façade, the fear and worry claiming her as it did the rest of us.

Madden seemed to want to argue, but thankfully, he listened to Halley’s words and released her wrist. Halley stood in front of me then, waiting and ready like the good princess she was. I knew I could, and probably should, feed from her wrist, but I was amped and her pulse was racing, inviting me in. Plus, I wanted to fuck with the man who tried to take away the blood I craved.

Diving in, my fangs met her supple skin, sinking in. Immediately, the vivid taste of her surrounded me as I sucked greedily, groaning as I felt my power swell. Wrapping one hand around the back of her neck to keep her close, I moved the other to her waist, pressing her body against mine. I knew it wasn’t necessary, but I was lost to the feeling and fuck, I desperately wanted to feel her body against mine. Feel ever curve pressing into me, until we both lost control.

A soft moan slipped past her lips, loud enough for Madden’s growl to surround us. Snapping my eyes open, I met his angry gaze, as I continued to drink heavily from his girl. And damn did it feel good. Finally, I felt the pressure in my chest reach its full potential and I released Halley. She didn’t back away immediately, and I stared down at her, almost getting caught up in the lust racing through her eyes.
