“Let’s go see what else you can do to those Hunters, shall we?” The woman asked, pulling me close to her, not giving me an inch.

Frantically looking around the room, I tried to find someone. Anyone to stop what was about to happen. But as if it was all those years ago, I was trapped and I feared I wouldn’t be able to run away this time.

Chapter Thirty-One

Madden

Lunging around the carnage in the room, I eyed my targets and swiftly took them out. Quickly, the Hunters were being decimated, while very few Divines were out for good. Unlike last time, this wasn’t a group of scared students doing their best to survive. We had skilled Guard members on our side now. And fuck, my girl, she took down plenty of Hunters with one move.

Ripping the throat of one of the Hunters aiming a gun at some of the other Shifters, I snarled at anyone who dared to come near me. If they did, their death would be gladly delivered. With my pack on my heels, I wandered through the crowded room, ripping into those who crossed my path. Focusing on my next prey, I readied to jump, when a scared voice sounded in my head.

Madden.

Halley’s word was filled with fear even in my head and ignoring the man stalking my way, I hurriedly searched the room, looking for fiery hair. The masses were too crowded where I was though, my vision not pinpointing her, even with my wolf’s heightened sight. Worry began racing through me. She wouldn’t have called my name unless she was in trouble. And yet she hadn’t screamed out loud. The way she had promised. Anger began entangling with worry as I realized that if it had been the Hunters, she would have yelled. She would have gotten my attention. Which meant, it wasn’t the Hunters Halley was currently scared of, it was the fucking Divines. The ones who wanted the last Enchantress out of the way.

Scrambling among the fighting people surrounding me, I began to track her down by scent, when a body came hurdling at me. Taking my full weight, whoever tackled me brought me to the ground, right as a round of bullets sprayed above us. Snarling my teeth, I came face to face with Wilder, his own fangs out and bared.

“You’re welcome.” He spat, about to flash away when I gripped his arm in my jaw. I couldn’t focus on why the fucker had just saved my life, right now I needed his help. Unhinging my jaw, I shifted back, getting out my words as fast as possible.

“Someone has Halley, not a Hunter, she needs help. I can’t find her.”

Wilder immediately began searching the area as well, but we were in the middle of the chaos. There was no chance to see or hear anything besides the gunshots and feral screams of our enemies dying. As more Hunters came at us, we pushed aside our search, fighting side by side, as agony over the thought of losing Halley spurred me on. Once all these fuckers were dead, I’d find my girl. And then I’d rip apart whoever dared to harm her.

Not wanting to waste time shifting, I grabbed two fallen guns off the floor, handing one to Wilder. We could play the Hunters way too. Standing shoulder to shoulder, the two of us faced off against the Hunters spilling our way, taking them down fast and efficiently before their weapons could touch us. As the men and women fell before our feet, they began convulsing and I looked past them to see Eli in a corner, igniting their pain and making it impossible for them to move.

Locking eyes with him, I mouthed Halley, hoping he could see the urgency in my eyes. We needed to find her. Eli’s eyes widened in understanding, and he began to move, when the men and women guarding him stopped him, refusing to budge. Shaking his head, he began animatedly yelling at them, but I didn’t have time to focus on him. I needed the rest of these Hunters dead.

Resuming my assault with Wilder, the Hunters began to dwindle until there were none left standing, the rest of our people doing their jobs to take out the Hunters. Gazing around the room, all I saw were Divines. Bloody and breathing heavy, but with elation in their eyes. The threat was gone. There were no more Hunters to attack.

Wilder gripped my arm tightly, turning me towards him. Blood covered his face and he grinned wildly at me before speaking.

“Now we find her.”

Chapter Thirty-Two

Halley

The sun was shining. Bleeding through the gaps in the trees, it highlighted the peace of the area. And yet, not even fifty feet away was a warehouse covered in dead bodies. It seemed to be all I could think of at the moment. How many people died at the hands of both sides. How many more would have to die before one side was content with the outcome? Before they had the power they so desperately craved.

I wasn’t stupid, I knew this woman was dragging me out here to kill me. To murder me away from prying eyes that would question why a Divine was killing the last Enchantress. And yet I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Because the sun was shining. It felt too beautiful for these to be my last moments. A death like this seemed like it should happen in the dark of the night, like when Mom was taken from me.

Stopping in our tracks, the woman let go of me, only to take out a gun tucked into the back of her pants. Pointing it at my head, the reality of the situation crashed over me and I began trying everything possible.

Pulling on my power, it fizzled out before I could even grasp it. I knew the last of my source had been used to call out to Madden. The man who I hoped was on his way to me right now. But I knew he couldn’t just leave the fight.

“Why are you doing this?” I begged, hoping she would realize this was wrong. I wasn’t their enemy. I wasn’t going to take from the Divines. I only wanted to help them.

“Orders.” Her reply was taut and quick. No hesitancy.

“You don’t have to do this. Please.” I began pleading, knowing this was my last chance. I couldn’t fight my way out of this, and my power was tapped out, refusing to come back.

The woman didn’t even flinch at my words and I knew there was no getting to her. She was simply a pawn following the orders of her king. Closing my eyes, I refused to look my end in the face. Instead, I thought of the happy moments. Of my childhood with Mom. The care and kindness of Eli. The excitement and challenge of Madden. The friendship and laughter with Kalani. And when the gunshot rang out, I was ready.

Except no pain came. Opening my eyes, instead of staring down the barrel of a gun, I locked eyes with deep brown ones. Knox’s eyes were steely, no regret to be seen. A gun hung from his clenched fist, the only hint of emotion I could gather from him. The woman who had brought me out here laid before my feet, the sun making her blood glisten. And even though I had no remorse for the woman, it didn’t seem right. Death didn’t go with the light.

“We don’t have time. We need to leave.Now.”Knox’s words snapped me out of my thoughts and I stepped towards him.

Meeting me halfway, Knox gently gripped my arm, as if he knew I needed the support.
