I sat down, gesturing for Charlotte to join me. “Get some caffeine in you and then we can talk.”

She took a sip, holding the mug between two hands. Her body shivered and I realized I’d opened the window behind her a little too wide. The air here was cooler which I liked but it was probably too chilly for her. When I started to give a fuck about making Charlotte comfortable, I didn’t know, but I picked up one of my sweatshirts off a nearby chair and dropped it on the table.

“Put this on,” I ordered gruffly. “It gets cold in the mountains.”

She gave me an odd look and pulled it over he head, sticking her arms through the sleeves. The material was several inches longer than her fingers and she rolled the cuffs back, giving me a smile. “This is comfy. Thanks, Mack.”

“You’re welcome.”

Fuck. I liked that sassy, cheeky smile she flashed my way.

“I suppose you want to talk about the jail, right?”

She was correct.

“My club is the most important thing in the world to me besides my son. Those men are my brothers and some of them I’ve known a lot of years. A few have returned recently after I took control as pres.”

“The party you hosted last month. That was to welcome those new members?”

Good. She remembered. “Yeah. Hangman, Judge, and Wolf.”

“They seem to fit in well,” she observed.

Fuck yeah, they did. I cleared my throat, gulping down a swallow of hot coffee. “I need to ask you about Breaker.”

“I knew you would.” She sighed, pushing the coffee mug away as she brought up her knees, teetering on the edge of the chair.

“Come on. Let’s move to the den. It’s more comfortable there.”

She followed me to the sofa, hugging her knees to her chest once she sat. Straight white teeth nibbled her bottom lip. “I don’t want to talk about him,” she admitted, staring at me with big blue eyes that seemed to swim in emotion. “But I know that you’re asking because this affects your club.”

“I wouldn’t pry otherwise.” I hoped she could tell I was sincere.

“Breaker, Owen as I knew him, deceived me,” she began.

My hands curled into fists, and I forced myself to relax. If I reacted like a monster, I’d only end up scaring her or worse. I had to remain calm.
