A knock pounded on my door, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Come in,” I announced, somewhat annoyed. Never could get a fucking minute to myself since the moment I became president of the club. Made me a grumpy fucker after all the years I stayed in isolation, living away from Providence.

The door opened, crashing back against the wall as my son entered. He was in a mood, no doubt on edge about his brother.

“Just got off the phone with Bryce. He promised he’d talk to Sydney and wouldn’t sign anything without a deal.”

Pete sagged into the chair across from my desk, relieved. “Shit, pops. I can’t stop worrying about him. He took the fall for us. That crazy ass is lookin’ at serious time.”

“He is,” I agreed, “but he’s loyal. He’s proven that. If he gets out and wants a place in this club, he’s got it.”

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

“I know what you mean to each other. Family is important. I know I’ve fucked that up in the past, son, but I’m trying to make amends.”

“I know. I’m trying to move on from my shit too.”

We shared a moment of understanding we hadn’t been able to reach for years. Hit me right in the chest, but I didn’t get sappy about it.

“You hear anything else about that shit from the junkyard?”

I didn’t mind that he changed the subject.

“No. That greenish substance has unknown properties. I sent a sample to a guy I trust who works at a pharmaceutical company. He promised he’d find out what he could.”

“You don’t think that’s dangerous?”

“What choice do we have? There’s something unnatural about it. I’ve learned its highly conductive material, that it attached to our DNA and those of us that came in contact with it, but that’s it. We don’t know enough about it.”

“True,” Pete agreed grudgingly. “Keep me in the loop. I want to know what you find.”

“I will, son.”
