“Edge, I want you handling the rotations. Anyone has an issue, it goes to the V.P.”

“Alright, pres.” Edge gave me a smirk. Smartass probably wanted to call me pops but he wasn’t doing that in church.

“Valan, get with R.J. and make sure we’ve got plenty of supplies. Check over the inventory. If we need anything, take care of it, but fill me in if you’ve got to leave the compound.”

“No problem,” R.J. announced, lighting up a smoke. “I can work on that when I’m not getting Cara to relax.”

Shaking my head, I didn’t reply.

Valan folded his arms over his chest. “I can handle it. You got any worries in particular?”

“Ammo. Water. Food. Ass wipe. All the necessary shit.”

His lips curled upward in amusement. “I’ll make sure the shitters are stocked.”

“You better,” G.Q. announced. “Tank clogs that motherfucker every damn day. Add a new fucking plunger to the list. I tossed the other one out. Too many goddamn swishes. The rubber was eroding.”

“Fuck off,” Tank blurted. “My shit isn’t gonna break down rubber.”

I couldn’t help laughing, along with everyone at the table. These fucking assholes. Never a dull moment.

“I want you all checkin’ in with me and Edge with any new information. Tank, fill in Jake and Wolf. I don’t want anyone going rogue or anything else stupid right now. We keep this shit tight. Feel me?”

A chorus of “aye” erupted around the table as I ended church.

“CHARLOTTE, I NEED TOspeak with you a moment,” I announced, poking my head inside one of the private rooms where the ol’ ladies liked to hang out and play dominoes. They usually kept the minibar stocked for drinks and the fridge with their snacks. The brothers knew to leave that area alone.

No one wanted to piss off one of those women. It would be fucking suicide. Not to mention blue balls for days.

“Sure, Mack.” Charlotte gave the group an apologetic smile, joining me as I waited by the door.

“Come with me,” I murmured, knowing she’d follow.

“Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, just want some privacy.”

She didn’t argue, falling into step beside me as I climbed the stairs, going up to the second floor and down the hall to my room. I unlocked the door, gesturing for her to go inside. After she entered, I shut and locked the door.

“This must be serious,” she joked, placing her hand on my chest, right over my heart. “You seem a little excited. Your heart is hammering hard, big guy.”

She wasn’t lying. My heart was beating fast, but not for the reason she suspected. Focusing on the danger that surrounded her and the club, I’d grown anxious during the meeting. I couldn’t let anything happen to her or Sophie. I’d never forgive myself.

“With the threat from the Outlaws and Breaker, the club is going on lockdown,” I announced, more gruffly than I intended.

Charlotte blinked. “What does that mean?”

“No one leaves the compound without permission. Everyone stays inside in case of trouble.”

“Are you saying I can’t go to work? That Sophie can’t go to school?” There was an edge to her voice, like she was annoyed.

“Sugar,” I began.

She held up a hand. “No. I didn’t just hear you tell me that you’re dictating what I’m allowed to do and not do. Oh, and my daughter too.”

“It’s not safe,” I replied, trying to keep a hold on my temper.

I wasn’t used to having my orders questioned. No one did that to the president. That disrespect was fucking serious. I had to remind myself that Charlotte didn’t know this life. She didn’t understand the rules.
