“Sophie-bear? You there?”

“Mommy!”

My heart constricted when I heard her cry, sniffling into the phone

“I’m okay. Just a little headache and some scratches. I’ll be fine. How are you, baby?”

“I got a bruise on my leg when I fell, but it doesn’t hurt much. R.J. gave me ice cream and said I was super brave.”

“You are,” she agreed. “R.J.’s right.”

Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears, lingering for a few seconds before they spilled down the side of her face.

“When are you coming home?”

“As soon as I can. I need patched up a bit first. Okay?”

“But I want to see you,” Sophie pouted. “You need a hug.”

“You’re so smart. I do need a hug. You hold onto it for me. Be brave and patient and I’ll see you tomorrow. Can you do that?”

“Yes! I’m going to give you two hugs when I see you because it’ll help you feel better.”

“I have the most amazing daughter in the world,” Charlotte bragged. “I love you, Sophie-bear.”

“I love you, mom!”

Her eyes closed and I could see the fatigue on her face. All the stress and worry combined with her injury had wiped her out.

“Sleep, sugar. I’ll watch over you.”

A smile tugged at the corners of her lips before she was out, asleep so fast I hoped she didn’t have a concussion or anything else going on internally. I checked her over when I brought her inside and I didn’t see any signs that she had one, but maybe I was wrong.

I’d brought her to the cabin, knowing I could catch anyone tailing us long before we reached out destination. No one did.

While she slept, I cleaned Charlotte up, wiping away the blood and dirt from her skin. Her injuries were minor. Thank fuck because I was already pissed that she’d gotten hurt on my watch. My fucking clubhouse. That wasn’t okay.

She slept for the next four hours.

I checked in with Ghost, Valan, and Hangman. Everyone was accounted for. No major injuries. Most of the damage concentrated on the Ravagers clubhouse. Expensive, but replaceable.

Bored, I began to pace, watching over Charlotte. I didn’t want to leave her side in case she woke up scared, confused, or worried.

Eventually, my chin dipped when I dropped into the chair I pulled to the side of the bed. A shot gun and my 9mm were in my lap. Anyone showed up, they were getting pumped full of bullets.

My woman wouldn’t be harmed again.

MACK WASN’T IN THEroom when my eyes opened. I slowly sat up, disoriented. Some of the details were a little fuzzy in my head, but I did remember talking to my daughter on the phone. A vision of Breaker’s face entered my mind, but I must have been a little delirious because he didn’t show his face at the Ravagers compound.

Maybe I hallucinated or dreamed it.

The door opened and Mack walked, carrying a tray. How thoughtful.

“Got some chicken noodle soup, crackers, a bottle of water, and hot tea. Thought they’d make you feel better.”

“Thanks.”

He set the tray down, helping me to sit up before placing it over my lap. “Take it slow, sugar.”
